Why Paladins Rock

of course, were all forgetting about the great paladin / rogue prestige class, Shadowbane Inquisitor. Sneak attack from a Paladin, anyone?...going once....going twice....

We're playing a rogue-heavy game and are probably glad noone's playing a paladin. Everyone understood that one would screw up the workings of that particular game.

Heh. The last one-shot I DMed, I figured a paladin would be annoying with the at-will detect evil screwing up a plot point. So I suggested 'morally ambiguous' characters to the players.

Oh, good grief. Be careful what you wish for. Only one of the PCs had no rogue levels. At one point, two of the players looked at each other, nodded, and simultaneously rubbed out 'CN' and replaced it with 'CE' on their sheets.

The game was hilarious, and very, very unpaladinny.

Well, while we're at it, Breastplate is just 3 points of AC below Full Plate, and you can move much faster, with less Armor Check Penalty. Make that a mithril breastplate and we're almost in stealth-mode territory, which any serious evil-hunter should consider.

Unless I am mistaken, you don't move faster in regular breastplate than with regular Full plate (both 20'/15').

Heck wearing the fullplate is actually doing the rogue/ranger player a favour. Your tank hides with the horses behind some rocks completely concealed while the scout gets to hog the limelight, traipsing about finding all manner of goodies and secret ways.

Of course after all that tommy-rot is over the real heroes emerge and lay down the smacks.

Personally, I dislike full plate. And half-plate.
Why would I pay 1,600 gold for two more points of armor bonus compared to banded mail?
Because the 1,250 gp for +2 AC (full plate compared to banded mail) is a lot cheaper than the 4,000 gp you'd otherwise pay for +2 AC (banded mail +2 compared to banded mail).

Yeah, but you can run at x4 with a breastplate, and only x3 in full. So... faster.

And as we all know, Paladins don't run.
They do. They charge. :p

And sometimes, they may Withdraw With Honor, from overwhelming numbers and a useless death - if they're playing Lawful Good and not, as some have mentioned here, Lawful Stupid. ;)

Not to mention that plate armor is groovy.;)

Of course, retreat is an option. I just said they don't run. :)

When a Paladin needs to move quickly, he'll ride, won't he?
