Why replace the D20 System logo when you can do better?

Rise of the Gamerati
There has been a lot of activity about the D20STL changes.

There has been a big push for the other Open Gaming logos.

I haven't seen a logo that addresses everyone's issues.

You have two camps. Those that don't want restrictions on their content and those that want to be protected from the wrath of the politically correct or the moral minority.

These camps are not mutually exclusive.

While there may not be any need for such a thing, the solution here is to create something NEW. Everyone is trying to COPY what WotC did with the D20STL.

A simple industry-wide accepted rating system with logo might be what is needed here. The movie industry has one, the recording industry finally saddled on one, and we now have V-Chip on the TV.

You can fairly easily be able to indicate the type of content in the book OGL compatibility-wise and display a rating within that logo.

Example:

OGL-MA
OGL-Y7
OGL-ALL

I'm no lawyer, so I have no idea if WotC would allow such a thing, but everyone is thinking inside the box here. If you're going to go through all the effort to create something new, don't copy.

That's why most of us are talking about more than one logo. We want a logo that indicates game compatibility and a logo that indicates open gaming compatibility. If you want morals compatibility, don't stop using the d20 logo. It's that simple.

The problem is that we are REPLACING something that has been deprived from us: the sign of rules compatibility. In that regard we need to copy the FUNCTION of the d20STL, but without the FOUL-UPS that it now carries.

Personally, I'm all for a falt-out "Rules-Only" standardized logo. While the Prometheus logo fits all legal criteria, it only indicates compatibility to those already involved and knowledgable in this area. What is needed is a logo that SAYS "Compatible with x" to everybody who sees it!

Then leave logos for mature content and genre to the industry to sort out.

I'm working on something right now. I'll post it up when I got it done.

Fickle customers

1. The customer is fickle. With these economic times, RPGs are simply luxury items. People are going to spend their money very carefully. Having one or two different competing logos against the D20 System is a losing proposition all around.

2. The logo I'm proposing does several things, and is not mutually exclusive from any other logo. I would hope that a good "compatibility" logo could co-exist with the D20 System Logo (don't know if that's possible) and with the Open Gaming Logo and the Prometheus Logo.

3. Built-in content advisory. There is a great deal of concern by some about the Open Gaming logo being over-run by Neo-Nazis or some other organization that does vastly politically incorrect things. There are no safeguards to preventing such a thing. We can have MULTIPLE licenses with a single compatibility logo that will allow EVERYONE the ability to do their own thing, no matter how politically incorrect they want to be. On the other side of things, you could do very politically correct content and have a separate logo showing such built into the compatibility logo. The tie-in is the single compatibility logo design on each of the licenses, regardless of the content advisory.

The idea that you can have half the crowd go one way with the D20STL and the other half going the other way with Open Gaming/Prometheus is basically splitting your customer base. The consumer is not educated in these matters.
