This whole bruhaha about gnomes not being in the first Player's Handbook is ridiculous. Clearly, they've decided to hold them for PHB 2, which will also include the new classes of Illusionist and Necromancer. Appropriately, they've already decided on its title. It's going to be:

Player's Handbook II: The Necrognomeicon.

In an unusual example of targeted marketing, Wizards has decided that, in one city in Switzerland, gnomes will be part of PHB 1.
