Why would a frost giant have a frost weapon?

I've got to agree that WotC designers are a lazy bunch, I mean Specialist wizards and their bonus spell having to be taken from their specialist school......what's all that about!? :D

Gez specifically said "ice above, lava caves beneath". Lava, not occasional poison gas. And all I'm saying is that in MY campaign world ice and lava don't mix very well...

And subterranean lava lakes do create poisonous gases. Sulfurous fumes aren't good for your health.

Anyway, regardless of the campaign setting, snow usually doesn't fall in the Underdark. And that's precisely where most volcanic activity happens. You have surface eruptions only when the underground pressure is important enough.

Saying that ice and lava doesn't mix is like saying water and doesn't mix. Indeed they don't. But they can be in contact of each other anyway. Is your world "realistic" enough to not have underwater volcanoes?

It may sound good at first. But when would they meet? They live in totally different climates. The Frost Giants are going to come up to a lot of resistance on their way to assault the ancient racial enemy, the Fire Giants. Like White Dragons.

You mean, like the attack hounds of the frost giants? Why would frost giants fight the dragons they've tamed?

Exactly! Specialist wizards should get bonus spells from their opposite schools, that's a far more rational tactical choice, because that way, they would surprise their enemies!

To my mind, a cold creature using a fire weapon would pretty much be like me holding a stick that was crawling with moving, wriggling spiders and scorpions, always an inch or two from my hand...I might know that magic is keeping them from getting me, but damned if I'm gonna hold that thing voluntarily.

EDIT: And Gez? That picture scares the crap out of me.

Ordinary frost giants with frost weapons are lucky indeed.

Looking at Table 3-5: Treasure on page 52 in the DMG, CR9 monsters have an 8% chance to have 1 major magical item.

You know I've started a few doozies in my stay here in ENWorld, but I must say this is the STUPIDEST, longest running, argument, debate, whatever the hell you want to call this train wreck....ever.

Couldn't agree more! I'm completely stunned by what this thread has turned into. It's amazing how angry people can get if you happen to shake their preconcieved notions.

The only reason fire giants would be hard to find near frost giants is that the fire giants aren't going to want to go tromping through the bitter cold to find food.

Fire giants belong on tropical islands. With coconut drinks. And little umbrellas.

Likewise, there is no mention of the Steam domain for the Steam Mephits. And no Spider domain for the Elf, Drow entry. What does that mean?

You'll notice with interest, then, that there is NO Cold domain in the core rules.

I can see the designers saying "hey, since they are frost giants, let's give their clerics the inexistant Cold domain, the gamers sure will appreciate it alot, they love when the rulebooks are self-contradictory or incomplete, it gives them something to talk about!"

My appologies, the cold domain seems so fundamental I just assumed it was listed with the core rules. My point was to illustrated how the designers were already rounding out the Frost Giants, and to prove that the designers did a good job.

There was really, in my opinion, no need to take such a harsh tone with me, seeing as how I WAS agreeing with you.
