We don't have the official rules for a miniatures game, but we're both reasonable good with the combat rules for normal 3.0 D&D, so we thought, why not set up a skirmish? It'll be fun, we can spend an hour or two figuring out our sides, doing the combat, etc...
Of course, cocky DM that I am, I expected to win.
The rules I established (probably can be easily exploited, but we can both exploit them equally, and we're not selling it so it doesn't matter):
The total of the CRs of the monsters on each team must equal 20.
The two teams can be made of any monsters in the monster manual with a CR of 10 or lower (no Tarrasques).
The idea was we would each build a team with synergy between the members and see how well we did.
So build myself a team of:
1 Troll (CR 5)
1 Umber Hulk (CR 7)
3 Darkmantles (CR 1 each)
1 Phase Spider (CR 5)
I didn't spend a lot of time thinking up my team, but the Hulk has tremorsense, and the Darkmantes can "see" with sonar, so I was going to use the Darkmantles Darkness ability to confuse the enemy. The troll is my combat tank. (we decided that, since my wife didn't have any fire or acid on her team, that if she killed the Hulk and the Darkmantles, then reduced the Troll to unconsciousness, it would count as a win for her).
My wife's team:
2 Ice Mephits (CR 3 each)
1 Frost Giant (CR 9)
1 Juvenile White Dragon (CR 5)
Crap. The cold team. The breath weapons of the mephits and dragon won't hurt any member of her team, and the Giant's attacks are horribly effective. Oh well, I'm sure I can pull out of this...
We roll initiative and join combat. The Troll charges forward, then finds the entire area around it encased in Freezing Fog from the dragon. It can't see to find its way out, and spends most of the combat moving one square, slipping, getting up, moving, slipping, etc... It gets in a few good licks, but not enough to really matter. The mephits try to summon other mephits, and succeed in gaining 1 ally.
The Umber Hulk sees the fog and burrows so as not to be slowed by it. It goes straight for the Giant, the only opponent touching the ground and visible via tremorsense. It takes a couple rounds to get there. The phase spider goes etherial, but finds itself in the fog and it can't see, even from the etherial plane. It keep going towards where the enemies were, but they're long gone by the time it emerges from the other side of the fog.
Meanwhile, the mephits and dragon swarm my Darkmantles, killing them easily before they manage to get off a single globe of darkness.
My Hulk engages the Giant, confusing it with its gaze. Damage inflicted on the Giant is minor but steady over the next few rounds. The phase spider, finally out of the fog, goes after the giant as well, since all the other opponents are flying.
The dragon lands in the fog and starts whalloping the Troll, but is disgusted with the constant regeneration and goes off to help the Giant. The mephits swarm the Umber Hulk and end up confused as well. One attacks it's companion, and the others stand around doing nothing. Just about then, the troll finally stumbles out of the Freezing fog and rips one of the mephits to pieces with a single group of attacks. Remaining mephits ready breath attacks against the phase spider, which has succeeded in poisoning the giant for it's greatest total HP loss (due to Con loss) of the battle. The spider reappears out of reach of one mephit and badly damages the other (which retreats to the freezing fog to regenerate), while taking minimal damage from the breath attack. The giant gets confused by the Hulk and generally does little.
The dragon, meanwhile, has been breathing on the Umber Hulk from the confusion-shelter of the Freezing Fog. It keeps rolling 1 or 2 for number of rounds until the breath recharges. Finally, the Umber Hulk dies and an impromptu (and probably incorrect) rationalle on my part rules that the confusion effects end when it dies. The giant immediatly readies an action to attack the phase spider next time it appears, and a single (critical) hit squashes it into green goop.
They all turn and make short work of the troll.
Score:
My wife's team slew 1 troll, 1 umber hulk, 3 darkmantles, and a phase spider worth a total of 20 CRs.
My team slew 1 Ice Mephit, worth a total of 3 CRs.
She was quite pleased with herself, I might add.
