You can already do that in 3E anyway. Sorcerer/Wizard or Sorcerer/Illusionist Wizard.

I was hoping at least one OD&D player would have gotten the reference.

You have no idea how hard I worked on ensuring my magic-user had an 18 Dexterity on top of his remarkable intelligence so I could make the class switch. (Or at least I think that was one of the prereqs. It's been so long ago.) And then picking the right level to start over so I wouldn't cause too many problems for the rest of my party. ... Good times. Yep. Good times.
