Will Modern need a revision too?

Just wondering if Modern will need an overhaul too, or if it safe to buy a copy. Just getting it for the upcoming Gamma World game, the d20 Modern setting looks a little dorky to me from what I have seen from Polyhedron. I know the srd is out, but I do like holding a book over printing out a file.

Thanks!

I think it is pretty safe to buy d20 Modern at the moment, I have not heard of any rumours of a revision yet.

Just of of interest, what aspects of d20 Modern do you find 'dorky'?

For the most par the book seems to have many of the up coming changes that are going to be in 3.5.

Yeah, i think they included most of the 3.5 changed in modern. Also it's not quite as big as dnd so is less likely to have Wizards wanting to reprint it.

Thank you for the replies, everyone! I feel safe and secure in purchasing a copy then. As for why I feel it is dorky (just my opinion): Most of what I have seen of d20 Modern is through Polyhedron (both in article and mini-games), although a player in the group has it and had loaned it to me, I was reluctant to really get into it. With games like HiJinx and the Mecha game, it seems to me that Modern is targeted to a younger audience than I am in (I just turned 34). Ten years ago it would have seemed cool, but the whole punk/dj battling bugbear thugs in dark alleys smacks a little too closely of the World of Darkness that absorbed pieces of my brain back in the early 90's. But, for Gamma World, I will give it a go.

Thanks again!

Polyhedron should not be used to gauge d20 Modern. I like Modern and haven't really liked most of the Modern-based Polyhedron game. Modern is a fairly generic system for modern games. It has options for magic and psionics, and actually devotes a surprising amount of space to fantasy elements, but is a rather complete game when it comes to modern campaigns.

If you like d20 and want to run a modern game, it is probably the best choice, unless you are going to run a genre that already has a d20 game, such as spies or superheroes. I know I will be using it for most of my gaming needs, other than D&D.

I was confused, though, when you make the correlation mecha=younger audience.

A fellow Idahoan! Egads! Thank you for the advice. I am slithering out later today to purchase the Modern book and absorb the information. I understand that Bad Axe Games is also putting out a book that works fantasy using the D20 Modern book.

Mecha may not be just for a younger audience, it is just something I have gotten away from. After living a while in Japan and seeing endless mecha cartoons and mecha toys everywhere I guess the idea stuck. Although I do enjoy working with mecha models and making them look realistic as possible, just not a gaming thing for the group or myself.

"Hijinx" isn't d20 Modern. Although it is d20 and it is modern.

Giant robots aren't for everyone...myself included.

"Iron Lords of Jupiter," in the new issue of Polyhedron, is a d20 Modern game of planetary adventure in the spirit of Flash Gordon and John Carter...not exactly what the youngsters are digging these days, but just fine for us older well-read types.

Heh. If you think 3 years is too early for a D&D revision, to have a revision after 8 months since its debut means that the game is not going to survive.

So far, so good. In fact, some of the mechanics in the current d20 Modern is now being incorporated into the D&D revision (e.g., d20 Modern TWF = 3.5e TWF = 3.0e TWF + 3.0e Ambi).

But check with us in ... say 3 years from last November. :p
