Will save while unconscious

I can't site the rule for you atm... but an unconcious target is always considered Willing for saves.

I'm sure someone will come along shortly to pull it off the SRD for ya.

Willing for harmless spells like teleport, etc. Choosing to forgo a save against a harmful spell is a conscious choice though.

I'd say you just keep putting on and taking off the helmet on the unconscious person like fifty times. They are bound to roll a 1 eventually.

A character who succeeds on his save can continue to wear the helmet without suffering the effect of the curse, but if he takes it off and later puts it on again, another save is required. The curse only works once; that is, a character whose alignment has been changed cannot change it again by donning the helmet a second time.

And yet, if the target is unconscious, how would you know if it worked?

Probability theory.

Fortunately, two failed saves don't put them back where they started. It might be that they fail the very first save, and the next forty-nine cycles are just wasted effort on your part. But the odds are pretty damned good that they'll fail at least one of the fifty saving throws, and at least one is all you need.

Being unconscious make you "willing" in regard for the target line of the spell, but you still get saves if applicable.

Note though: I believe everyone is automatically considered to forego saves for "harmless" spells unless they desire otherwise (and I don't don't believe unconscious individuals can "desire" otherwise)

It is in cases like these that the rules annoy me.

I mean, I know it has to work that way, but it just seems very unsatisfying to me.

In this specific case, I think I'd make an ad hoc ruling that such a helm once saved against would forever be powerless over you unless your will save lowered.

Well, you could get even more literal to combat it: "... if he takes it off and puts it back on again..." might preclude the curse from affecting someone if a third party takes it off and puts it back on them.

It would fix the unconsciousness problem, but it wouldn't stop someone holding you at gunpoint and saying "Take it off... put it on... take it off..."

Right. Which is why you don't get lots of people accidentally making their Will-Half saves against Cure Light Wounds while unconscious! :)
