Will you DM or play in pick up games?

Sounds kind of interesting. I used to do sort of pick-up games at a local game store. It was kind of fun, and I wouldn't mind having something like that again. However, I've got way less patience for crappy players and GMs than I used to, so that's a problem for me. It'd almost be better to have a group of twenty or so vetted out people that I'd play with if a group was mostly made up of them. Sort of a small D&D union or something.

Not so much a pick-up game, but I've been thinking about a dilemma that 4e proposes to me. When it comes out, I'll be DMing a game, but I really want to play the new fighter. I have played online before, but it wasn't that great of an experience. Free apps like OpenRPG don't work well, and the pay ones don't have enough people. Getting a good online game is hard. Having an "official" online game table that most D&D players who play online will be using gives you a larger audience in which to find people that have a play-style that you have and a compatible time.

As such, the new D&D game table actually is a bit more intriguing to me than it was when it was first announced because it allows me to play as a player without having to wait until I'm done with my campaign for my players.

If the DDI virtual tabletop meets my expectations (and the community is large enough for me to join a pick-up game at any time with 15 minutes of notice), then absolutely. In fact, that is the only thing that would entice me to subscribe to the DDI.

However, I rather suspect my expectations are unrealistically high. I'm not sure the technology is quite there yet, and even if it is I seriously doubt WotC will be able to match it with equally powerful software. If they should fail to meet my expectations, then I'll refrain from giving them grief over it... but I won't subscribe either.

When they rewrite the Virtual Tabletop and Character Generator as cross-platform applications, I'll take a look. I have no interest in purchasing Windows, simply to try the applications via Boot Camp.

When a VTT addresses the issues of three dimensional movement, for aerial, underwater, and variable-gravity planar adventures, I'll be more than interested. I know the WotC folks said that addressing the z-axis issue was "on their radar", so perhaps there is hope.

I'll be using DDI to supplement at least one of our two planned 4e tabletop games.

But I would *definitely* be down for some pick up action. You know, if there were any interest.

I sure hope so. I'm on the west coast and my time to play is probably from 10:00pm to 12:00pm so I HOPE that there are others like me with the same schedule.

I know for sure that I'll be Dming at first. It's pretty much already been decided in my gaming group.

But, if I can get in an online game, I'll be doing that too.

Well, I'm also one of those Mac users, but I fully expect to be upgrading to an Intel machine sometime this summer. When that happens, I'll be setting it up to boot Windows for those apps I can't get native.

Assuming that works with all the DDI stuff (and with a decent graphics card, I have no reason to believe it won't), I'll be very interested in pickup games. Especially because in "the real world," I'm almost certainly going to end up DMing, at least initially, since I'm the 4E evangelist recruiting a group.

I know what you mean about OpenRPG, Sphyre. I used it a few times, but it was like pulling teeth.

For the past couple of weeks, I've been running 4e preview adventures for a couple of friends online using MapTools for our virtual tabletop and Skype for voice chat.

It's working great. I'm really impressed with how close you can get to a tabletop experience using those tools.
