I'll do what the Kobolds will do... burn an effigy of Garl Glittergold while reminiscing about how PunPun and Meepo managed to persuade the 4e designers to drop Gnomes from the phb

They are not gone. They will appear in a future 4E product (Eberron related for certain, possibly in a Fey related book)

Probably apty named 'The Revenge of the Gnomes'

As a filthy red-boxer, my first experiences with D&D didn't really involve gnomes, so they sort of felt like a weird add-on from the moment I first started mucking with AD&D. They quietly let themselves out of our games a long time ago. I doubt the release of 4e will change anything.

Gnome, no I don't. Proceeds to join Kobold minions in ritual sacrifice of gnomes dressed up to resemble that damned cavern-wrecker.

For everyone else there will reputably be the appendix to the MM.

Since they'll be in the Monster Manual... They really aren't moving all that far. Certainly not far enough to warrant a 'going away' party. If they decide to throw a kegger with their new eye of flame beholder roommates, however, I'll certainly be there.

They're not going to be disappearing from Eberron. So my character's lives will still be threatened by them.
What he said. :uhoh:
I really hope they are not listening.

Gnomes in 3E were a missed opportunity. They could have been tinker style, goggle wearing, full metal alchemists. Some of the art suggested this was a move WOTC were interested in making.

But the red hat wearing forest gnome cliche proved too strong. And so Gnomes remained a joke.

Good riddance 3E gnomes.
