Me: "I weep today, I grieve and lay out my sorrow for all to see. It is a dark day, because our gnome has left us ..."

Not me: "Dude, he's in the next room, raiding the buffet."

Me: "Oh ..."

Cheer up guys the gnomes won't go unemployed, as long as we have carnivals they will enjoy a happy healthy life. What did you think happened to all those Kender?

When the 4th edition PHB is released for public consumption, will you be sad at the absence of gnomes from the core book or pleased to see them gone?

I vote "third option": "I'm probably going to leave the party WITH the gnomes."

Well said! My homebrew world is over 20 years old. There are gnomes in it. They play a small part in the world, but still play a part. I have no worries that 4e somehow missed gnomes. It is just typical you know, they are often overlooked. My world will continue to have gnomes whether 4e comes to the world or not. (as well as other things)

I can understand how they might not be 'core' enough to be in the PHB. So what, I am not bothered. I think the gnome party will be more fun anyway and they don't care if WoTC doesn't love them enough. I don't see the big deal. Go ahead and enjoy the party, which ever one you attend. As the gnomes will tell you, it is most important to have parties and enjoy them.

I'll be sad... my gnome beguiler is easily the most enjoyable PC I've played so far, and they were a much appreciated (for me) dose of whimsy.
Yep, my non-tolerance for whimsy is a big part of my dislike of them.
