Will you laugh or cry at the gnomes' good-bye party?

Waving gnomes bye-bye from the PHB...

I'd say it's more anger than sadness that 4e decided to abandon a race that has been core so long, simply because of a bunch of folks that don't understand them. Removing the gnomes is just another sign that D&D is going a direction I don't like.

The fact they replace them with freaking Dragonborn and another race of elves is a sign of the times, and the times, they do suck.

Agreed.

I've never had much time for gnomes, but since I'm still flying the flag for old-style halflings I'd be a hypocrite not to shed a tear for a race that's been around so long.

They'll be in the damn monster manual. How far are they going?
There are people who will buy all 3 books as soon as they come out.

There are also people who will only ever buy the Players Handbook, for whom having gnomes in the Monster Manual is not very helpful.

A very good point. I've been struggling to understand why people are saying "gnomes are gone from core", when they will be in the MM, but your explanation sounds good and plausible.

/M

Option 3 - Won't miss them, because they'll be right there in the Monster Manual along with other playable races that I will allow my players access to as I see fit.

And as to the explanation given above about only buying the PHB: It would be extremely atypical for an entire gaming group to buy only the PHB. The DM at least usually will buy the MM. Ask him to borrow it and make your dang gnome! The first step in character creation is "ask the DM." :)

As I understand it the 4th edition "gain racial abilities as you level" rule means you will have to ask the DM to borrow the book every time you level, as your racial abilities are going to keep changing. This might not be convenient for either party.

You also can't borrow the book if you are taking part in an online game, which 4th edition is trying to make easier.

Of course, if you are online you should be aware of and have access to the SRD; however that might not be available for a while, and all we have at the moment is the hope that the rules for gnomes as characters will be in it.

So, if you really want to play a gnome you either buy the MM or wait for the SRD? The world is going to end!!!! :p

Really, people are just blowing things way out of proportion just because they are too emotional over a new edition.

Edit: Or the DM could scan/photocopy the gnome page for his personal use and let you borrow that. I don't think the Copyright Police are going to bust down your door for such a minor thing.

Viva la 4E Gnome! :D
