Winged Rogue Ideas

Archer= full attacks = needs high mobility to use the bow for full attack actions which make an archer interesting while flying. Well, and having to get a Fly spell cast on you to allow you to shoot is a bit silly for a winged elf.

Dragon Disciple class wouldn't be interesting to get around the LA? And it helps a lot to avoid balance issues with a flying group member at low levels.

I used one in a previous game, where my Hound Archon carried three different greatswords. DM ruled that the Quivers description provided sufficient space for storage.

I'd have ruled similarly.

I use mine for a mix of ranged and melee weapons, as well as other odds and ends that vaguely resemble spears/javelins/arrows in overall dimensions. My Monk had his quarterstaff in his, along with the bolts for his crossbow and his javelins...and everyone knows about how wizards can use it to carry an arsenal of wands and the like.

How are you explaining (*cough*excusing) the winged template? It's not like an elf will sometimes, by chance, be born with wings. It's a very silly template in that way.

I'd just go with a Raptoran, as they do not have a LA or any ability modifiers, and a raptoran character with 10 HD gets a 40' fly speed at average maneuverability. They also get a host of other, collectively impressive bonuses. I'd say they are right up there with dwarves in power level; maybe even a bit higher. If you get worried about it, just nerf it a little, like eliminating the spellcasting bonus, Low-Light Vision, and/or Unerring Direction. I do believe that this flying race is better balanced, if I may be so bold as to say so myself, but it may not be right for her. You could use it for NPC's instead, ones that will be able to harass her in the air for some fun combat situations.

Ahhh, and I wouldn't advise her to change her mind about the class. If she goes for ranged attacks (I must highly recommend this tactic, although I've had fun building flying melee attackers in the past) and she is worried about never getting a chance to sneak attack, she can take the feat Deadeye Shot [PHBII] and work together with the party tank to get those wonderful sneak attacks. With Rapid Reload (optional, but ideal for flying) and Crossbow Sniper [PHB2], she can even maintain a 60' distance while doing so.

Or you could implement facing rules, so that she can use her maneuverability and some cunning to get plenty of flanking opportunities. If she is worried that her AC will be too low, swap Dodge for Expeditious Dodge [RotW], which gives +2 against all attacks, instead of just one opponent, if she manages to move 40 feet in a round (which should be easy enough to do)

You might want to look at the Raptoran race out of Races of the Wild.

Don't have Races of the Wild, sadly, or it might be worth looking at. Still, she likes elves.

One of the best bang-for-the-buck magic items for a PC concentrating on ranged attacks is the Quiver of Ehlonna...
Ooh, that's an interesting idea. Thanks.

Actually, that worked out pretty well, because she mentioned her desire to play a winged elf long enough in advance that I could set it up. The end of the previous semester's game featured a large portion of the countryside being exposed to a briefly-open portal to a Far Realms/Dol Quor sort of plane, and being accordingly warped in mind and flesh. Dealing with this will occupy a good part of the current semester, and our winged elf is just one of the victims with relatively benign symptoms.

Also a very good idea. I had forgotten about that feat.

Scout doesn't have the social skills, but those can be subbed in easily enough. Good thought.

Of course, bearing in mind that as a winged humanoid, said character is going to stick out like a sore thumb pretty much everywhere those sly social rogue-type skills would come up.

The character is memorable. Very memorable. If Lefty Maloy is curious who's been asking around about him, folks'll remember the wings, and that character'll likely be the oooonly person around whose got 'em.

The AD&D comic had a winged human (?) rogue. Pity that story line went to pieces, at the end, (Time of Troubles bruhaha) together with the art (went from good to atrocious overnight)... I'm sure you can find some of those comics lying around somewhere.

The character sounds nice, but remember, for a high level archer, even the 60 arrows in a Quiver of Ehlonna will not last long: So buy at least two ;)

Don't forget: She's a rogue. Wearing a good cloak and maxxing out Disguise means her wings are not going to be noticed as long as she does not use them.
