Now get this:

I closed the lid on the laptop Saturday, and didn't touch it again till this evening (Monday). I just opened it and test the connection. I don't know why I decided to test it, I just thought, "wouldn't it be funny?"

It's working now. I don't know why or how. I didn't do anything to it since Saturday, and it wasn't working when I last made any adjustments or checks.

What the hell?

I'm making this post from the laptop.

Thank you to everyone who offered advice to help me. Especially SteelDraco, who gave me a lot to work with.

I'm really stunned, and completely flabbergasted, at how this is now working. I think I would rather find out I forgot to plug something in than to find no reason for the problem and then no reason for the fixing. Things that make no sense drive me nuts.
