My first thoughts are lore wizard for OP with shadow sorc 3. That allows variant human for the feat and gains free darkvision. It's converting slots to sorc points powers meta-magic.

Not a typical MC but might be fun.

What if they still roll the saving throw like hold person does and they don’t auto fail the save?

Interesting Idea, I might try one. It would be interesting to have hexblade warlock and shadow sorcerer who modified spells with wizard.

Have you seen the arcanist class from Pathfinder? Mixing wizard and sorcerer. You can find it in the SRD.
