Wizard Martial Weapon

Say you have a wizard who suddenly has proficiency with all simple weapons and one martial weapon his choice (human paragon). He's never going to be a real combatant. What do you pick for the martial weapon, and why?

Shortbow is a decent choice, as is Guisarme.

out of interest why shortbow rather than longbow?

scythe and some black robes for that proper intimidating necromancer look :D

Because one day the wizard might happen to do more damage on a shot than the ranger, and the ranger would be sad.

As for the longsword, using that necessitates getting close to the enemy.

Actually, a scythe* would be useful for the good coup-de-grace damage (and chances are good that a mage can create great opportunities for that).

Otherwise, a reach weapon could probably be good for AoO's.

*... odd that a farm implement used by commoners is a martial weapon

The 2 handed Scythe is based off the farm implement, but it's not identical (read the PHB entry on it). Also, it's one thing to use it on a farm, it's another entirely to use it in battle.

it's an improvised weapon for them? dunno
it's weird to think that every paladin is trained to wield a scythe effectively in combat.

Longbow.

Because, as a melee weapon, I will choose Longspear for the wizard. With Combat Reflex feat, it works as a very good protection for a wizard. Better if he has Steadfast Boots (from AEG). As wizard can cast True Strike, reach weapon is good to disarm an opponent who does not have reach. And if you can afford to take Power Attack feat, two-handed weapon is good.
