Wizard Martial Weapon

The 2 handed Scythe is based off the farm implement, but it's not identical (read the PHB entry on it). Also, it's one thing to use it on a farm, it's another entirely to use it in battle.
That much I figured out. I just thought is was interesting:

The 'commoner' D&D miniature wields a scythe, however the commoner NPC class reads:
"The commoner is proficient with one simple weapon. He is not proficient with any other weapons"

Assuming you aren't going with a longbow, I'd agree with Shin Okada on a reach weapon. Keeps the bad guys away sometimes, and allows disarms/trips from a safe distance.

I love this argument that commoners should be proficient with scythes and sickles.

Assuming that there is no sifference between a normal scythe and one designed for fighting with.

Fighting with one and reaping crops is going to be completly different, absolutely completly different (apart from the bit where you have to swing it, its got to move). So when you run up and start to stab Farmer Giles as he reaps his corn (very handily using his scythe with profession farmer) and he tries to defend himself with his scythe and can't fight very well (-4 non proficiency penalty) he swings like hes cuttign corn and you move he tries to slash but he hasn't practiced that. It all fits perfectly :)

My wiz5/ftr1/soon-to-be-EK 1 character just picked up a glaive. I'm fairly happy with the weapon. Reach weapons are the way to go. Add in a wand of truestrike and you've got yourself a great flanking charge weapon.

I'd steer clear of ranged weapons, unless you're keen on loading up on truestrikes. There's just too many feats that go into improving ranged accuity to make them worthwhile for a non-focused archer.

I think the best argument for "tools and weapons work differently" is this:

Using the combat rules, what would you use for mining in D&D?

A greatsword. It does the most damage. And that's all that matters. A pick is so out of the question that it's laughable. That x4 crit won't do anything to stone.

Oh, and the fact that peasants don't get either cleave and great cleave or whirlwind attack for free (in order to hit each stalk).

I am pretty sure that wheat and grains follow the swarm template.

That would make them either immune to weapon damage, or only suffer half damage from weapons... the tool of choice for slaying grain would be Fireball!

I imagine a fireball would work pretty well. Your neighbors wouldn't be too happy with you for setting their crops on fire, but you live and learn.
