wizards out of the norm

I haven't seen many wizards that emphasize the religous inclinations of their character (excepting of course Mystra, but she's over done). Try making a wizard that was raised by the clergy of Azuth, and is a acting member of the clergy himself (but not a cleric, not all the clergy are divinely gifted). Play your wizard always with the tenents of the faith of the Lord of Spells first in your mind. Search out new magics for the church. Try to teach magic's usefulness and spread the word whereever you go. Carry a few blank spellbooks (or perhaps with a cantrip or two inscribed) to give to children that show magical promise. Freely share spells, don't hoard your knowledge. You could shoot for the Loremaster PrC (which is very much in keeping with the style of Azuth) or the Arcane Devotee (though I don't think it's quite as appropriate in this case. Make sure to devote some skill points to the social skills (and if you choose wisely you might get some synergy bonuses) so that you can better spread the word of Azuth, also knowledge: arcana, and Knowledge: religion are obvious choices. Item creation feats would probably be the most appropriate.

One of my favorite characters was a flashy, charming rake who looked like the typical swashbuckling-noble, but was really just a wizard with Martial Weapon Proficiency & Weapon Finesse (Rapier). He wore an gauntlet on his fighting arm, in which he kept his material components and which doubled as a much needed perch for his snowy owl familiar. He specialized in flashy illusions and enchantments and was quite a fun character to play.
