Wizards vs Sorc

What would be the better choice, im very new to 3rd edition, and the sorcerer is completely new from second edition.

i know all about wizards, how they cast spells with intel and what now, but what im really asking is, do most people perfer wiz or sorc and why

In combat, a mid-level Sorcerer with decent spell selection is vastly more powerful IMO. Example:

A Sorcerer with the Fireball spell can use any of his 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th etc spell slots to cast Fireball - or any other spell in his list of that level or lower! Where a battle-Wizard might have a couple of fireballs memorised, a 9th level Sorcerer with CHA 18 can cast 12 Fireballs/day (7 3rd-level slots, 5 4th level)! For the ability to destroy armies, no other class comes close.
