wizards vs. sorcerers

Also, at low levels Sorcerers are far more powerful.

When you can cast 5 and know 2 first level spells compared to knowing several and only casting 2, you gain a massive measure of power.

Sorcerers continued firepower makes them far better in any sort of situation where they can't rest often.

IMC I disallow wizards. This is not because I dislike them, but because I like the innate abilities of sorcerers more than I like the researched abilities of wizards - it has more of a "fantasy" feel imho. Game mechanics-wise they're both great, and I sorely miss a lot of item creation facets that seem to accompany wizards, but those can be explained in other ways.

My 2.38 yen

I've always played and run wizards on a mana system. Kinda makes sorcerers superfulous. I am of trhe mind that sorcerers were a WotC cop-out to those of us who used spell point systems. "Throw the heathens a bone!" I'd still rather play a wizard, even a Vancian wizard, than a sorcerer.

Hey, bloodymage. My browser, MSIE, seems to be doing something odd, and I think it's because of your sig. Whenever I click on this thread, a login window for Microsoft.net Passport pops up asking me to login.

I'm thinking it's coming from your sig because 1) this didn't happen earlier in the thread, and 2) your sig picture is not showing up.

It's not a big deal, but it is a bit annoying. Is this happening to other people?

it's happening to me as well

Rather, I think their largest advantage is that they have no need to prepare spells. The importance of this advantage varies by the campaign in which you play. If your DM has you attacked in the middle of the night frequently, or has you kidnapped frequently, or has your possessions stolen frequently, the life of a sorcerer is much more attractive than that of a wizard. With the eschew materials feat from TaB (or the alternate sorcerer), you can cast any spell from your repetoire stark naked after being beaten all night.

Still gonna need the 8 hours of undisturbed rest and the short amount of prep time after that to "refill" your spell slots.

I think WotC chose the wrong path with Wizards and Sorcerors.

Sorcerors should have had unlimited spells known, just like a wizard, not have to prepare, but have less spells per day and slower access to higher level spells.

Wizards should have had the higher spells per day, to offset their preparation restriction.

I think someone phrased it well on another thread.

Wizards have excellent strategic flexibility.

Sorcerers have unparalleled tactical flexibility.

Basically wizards can potentially end up with a far wider range of spells to prepare, so they can get ready for some very specific circumstances. It is also easier for them to create magic items (bonus feats, wider access to spells) and for blasting purposes I would imagine many wizards would want to keep a few wands of fireball or whatever around.

The sorcerer doesn't have this range of responses, but when it comes to using metamagic he is way, way ahead of the game, even with the marginally increased casting time. A sorcerer who bothers to learn Still spell and Silent spell need never fear being silenced or grappled since they can still get on with business and cast escape or countermeasures spells - but they don't have to. They can funnel all their power into one or two spells if they need to - but they don't have to.

So my money goes on Strategic Flexibility vs Tactical Flexibility

Cheers

Funny. I just made a houserule that permanently kills this discussion and gives magic a more mystic (sorcererlike but with no sorcerers) feel.

Who am I kidding. People probably don't care about house rules.

The classes seem reasonably even but I plan on keeping sorcerers extremely rare IMC. There shouldn't be to many people walking around with dragon's blood in them. Wizards should be uncommon as well, but they are simply very intelligent people who have devoted their studies to magic. Any intelligent person could become a wizard, in theory, but sorcerors are very unique individuals.

No PC sorcerers yet, but if there are I'll make sure the player understands the implications of being one.
