WizKids is publishing a new Dungeons & Dragons-themed board game. This week, WizKids announced Dungeons & Dragons: Builders of Baldur’s Gate, a new board game designed by Matthew Dunstan, who is best known for designing the games Monumental and Elysium. Players compete to build prestige in the iconic Forgotten Realms city of Baldur's Gate, aiming to control both districts within the city and the three main factions of the city. Players must also contend with regular attacks from monsters attacking the city walls and harbors, forcing players to work together (or take advantage of the chaos to get a step ahead of your rivals.)
While WizKids is best known for its expansive line of D&D miniatures and statues, the company also has a more modest but robust board game line featuring a mix of licensed and original titles. This marks the first true D&D board game WizKids has published since its Adventure System line of board games that adapted various 5E campaigns into dungeon-crawl style board games, although WizKids also publishes Onslaught, a skirmish game that uses D&D miniatures.
Per WizKids' website, Builders of Baldur's Gate will be released in Q2 2025 and has a retail price of $64.99. The full description of the game can be found below:
In Dungeons & Dragons: Builders of Baldur’s Gate, a city-building game from acclaimed designer Matthew Dunstan, you are the head of a powerful family in the iconic city. You grow your prestige by building new businesses within the nine districts, both as one large network, and across all the districts. You must also extend your influence with the three main factions of the city: the Council of Four, the Flaming Fist, and the Thieves’ Guild.
As you place buildings, you will also place your influence cubes to indicate your control. This also includes special keeps, gates, and watchtowers, represented by building miniatures with slots for your influence cubes, allowing you to see the city grow in three dimensions!
Ah, but Baldur’s Gate is not only a city of industry in the Forgotten Realms, but a city of mortal danger. Mobs of monsters regularly attack the outer walls or from the harbor, forcing temporary alliances to fend off the incursions. Each family tries to take advantage of the crises, using them as stepping stones to advance their own agendas.
