WizKids to Release Glow-in-the-Dark D&D Miniatures

WizKids will release new miniatures with a DungeonGlo effect later this year. Today, WizKids revealed their next set of branded D&D miniatures - D&D Icons of the Realms: Underdark Expeditions. The new set contains 44 different miniatures, including some that have a glow-in-the-dark effect. The set will contain mostly classic D&D creatures like the gelatinous cube, the flumph, and the hook horror, with monsters like the gas spore having a glow-in-the-dark effect. It's unclear whether this new set uses artwork from the 2014 version of 5th edition or the 2025 Monster Manual as inspiration.

As a note, WizKids' parent company NECA is one of the largest unsecured creditors of Diamond Comics Distributors, which owns Alliance Games Distributors. Diamond owes NECA $2,682,994, as revealed in its recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Universal Distribution has an offer to buy Alliance Games although the large balance may impact WizKids' 2025 plans, especially as Alliance is a core distributor for WizKids.

D&D Icons of the Realms: Underdark Expeditions will come out in May 2025.

Well, you're right, I guess they'd be useful in a candlelight game. Or, would they, would you be able to see them glow in candlelight? I wonder. 🤔

You’re probably right, it’s usually gotta be dark enough that you wouldn’t be able to read your character sheet for it to actually work. In all honesty we struggled to read our sheets by candlelight as it was, it was something that didn’t last, but was some dumb fun at the time.

I can see a dramatic DM having fun hitting the lights in the room briefly before putting out some glowing minis at the start of fight.

As gimmicky and narrow-use-case-y as these are, damn if I'm not tempted to blow some money on them. The poster boy Gas Spore looks awesome. And who doesn't want a glowing myconid?

(I am not being sarcastic even a little bit. These things look SWEET.)
