Woes of a small polymorpher

My kobold wizard is about to hit 7th level and is considering Polymorph Self. The +/-1 size limitation is making me re-think this however. Does anyone have experience playing a small polymorpher? I'd like some suggestions for good shapes (I like to prepare the stats ahead of time). Reptiles are prefered, and keeping spellcasting ability is a definite bonus; but anything useful or interesting would be appreciated.

Since you are small to begin with instead of thinking monsterous think small. You can do some great information gathering as a dog or cat.
