There are a number of male feminists these days, from what I'm seeing. I myself am one. It may have to do with the breaking down of the notion that the other gender is the enemy until marriage, and so one should only hang out with your own gender (A notion which always makes me think, "Um... But I'm straight, I -like- women.")

Online gaming doesn't hurt, for several reasons, including:

1) Finding a real, proven female on the net makes romantic RP a great deal more relaxing (I've had 'female' characters try to seduce my characters, or my characters teasing but refusing them, and, when failing, suddenly announcing their RL age and male gender...).

2) Female gamers on the net are, on average, more in to the RP itself than male gamers, which makes them a joy for those males who DO game for something other than to stroke their ego, bash stuff, and talk dirty.

3) Smart women (which are easier to find in D&D than at a football game, though of course, one can like either and be of any intelligence) are fricking sexy, and a gamer, now that the "Lets give females crud stats" era is over, has a slightly better chance, on average, of encountering one to learn the fact. So much easier to appreciate someone who's not trying to be a Stepford-style person because of social training. Yay progress.

1) can't say much for the online romantic roleplaying....

2) Frankly, I'm more into the hack-n-slash than roleplaying as I have a stressful job and it's a great way to "unwind". Not to mention the other "guy talk" you mentioned. We have alot of gutter talk, bash monsters and bad guys and general silliness. Most that wouldn't be considered "ladylike" in any fashion.... just ask my female cleric who liked to use swear words and give one bad guy the finger (twice!).... and you can see that not all of us females are the same.... ;)

3) Huh? I give my female characters varying stats.... some are quite "hot" and others not so. The above-mentioned cleric had a 12 CHA score, more of it in looks than personality.

Sometimes it's better to hang around with those of the opposite gender, a mixed group...... that way the guys won't be called gay.... :p And the girls talk about "guy-bashing". We just all get together and pick on one male gamer.... :p But then he usually asks for it by the "open mouth, insert foot" method.....

For years now, the vast majority of the player groups I've been in have not been 100% male. Howevever it's very, very rare for there to be more than one female. In other words almost all the groups are 1 girl + X guys. Anyone else experienced this? Any ideas as to why that should be?

I have no clue.... we have 3 females (including me) and 5 guys. We had to boot one DM's gf because she was disrupting the whole party.

Both gaming groups I am in have more than one female/woman/ person with XX chromosomes. The Friday group is 5 males + 2 females and the Sunday is 2+2.
