Archivists are basically European hermetic occultists. Occultism casts spells by invoking the various secret names and titles of God, angels and demons, ancient deities, and other divine beings. It channels knowledge of secret divine lore through force of will to create magic. It also extremely syncretic, combining Jewish mysticism and angelology with Christian prayers and saint lore, with a bunch of old pagan names, rituals, and mystical legends as well.

The archivist is my new favorite class.

BAM. Sold.

No one specific story. Just a running joke/observation from almost day one of our friendship. C.A.'s a good guy, but he's got a long memory for slights (and he'll be the first to admit it, too).

Now, before anyone gets the wrong impression, the demigod Cas is in no way a joke; we'd never do something like that in a book like this. This is a truly horrific, malevolent entity who definitely has his place in horror and dark-fantasy games. It's simply that the choice of his name has a meta-game (meta-writing?) origin.
