Wood shape enables you to form one existing piece of wood into any shape that suits your purpose. While it is possible to make crude coffers, doors, and so forth, fine detail isn’t possible. There is a 30% chance that any shape that includes moving parts simply doesn’t work.

(And there's more of a description in the PHB)

So our party killed an ogre (yay!) and got his magic greatclub (double yay!). However, the great club is a large two-handed weapon (Boo). My druid wants to use Wood Shape to change the club to a two-handed medium sized weapon just by shaving some of it off, and slightly re-working it so that he can use it. The DM suggested I ask about it on ENworld.

Is this do-able? Wood Shape doesn't say anything about not affecting magic items, so by the RAW does it work? And also, should it work?

The question you have to answer is whether crafting a greatclub counts as "fine detail". A club has no cost and therefore I would say that it doesn't require fine detail (i.e. it doesn't require crafting). A greatclub, however, costs 5gp, so maybe it does require some amount of crafting.

And indeed this would be a Masterwork gretclub as well... whatever exactly that means.

But I don't want to craft it per se- I want to wood shape some off of it- heck, I could just use a sword to shave some of it away... wood shape just seems a bit more stylish.

Still, wondering whether it would work...

i did this to a weapon once and if you look at the pic of a great club it clearly isn't fine detail fine detail would be like latace work or a releave craving
P.S. we always just made you do a craft check for fine detail since you can do it untrained
