Woot -- quality new race flavor!

I think I liked the thieflings better before though, I liked the whole 'baby born from normal parents suddenly grows horns, and a tail, and is left on the monastery's doorstep, to an uncertain fate' feel they had, but it's by no means bad.
A crying farm girl to her shocked parents: "I didn't know! He was so handsome and nice; how could I have known!"

Well, judging by prior bits we've seen, the whole "small race" was a proud nail that got pounded in. And, let's face it, it really is pretty hard to justify something as small as a halfling having more than about a 12 Str. My 3 year old daughter is about 3 feet tall and 25 pounds. That's halfing sized or close enough. It's just way too small to be any sort of realistic. It's fine if you ignore it, but, really, I can see how it might annoy people.
It's also fine if you have dealt with animals of different breeds or species which have very similar physical forms but different sizes. People who think a fully mature member of one race should be held to the physical capabilities of a toddler of another race are what strains my suspension of disbelief. ;)

Word up!

And I'm a little disappointed, if halflings are to be Medium-sized, in the lack of a true Small race in the PH. Tiny little underfoot people going on bigfolk adventures is one of those fantasy tropes that date back straight through Tolkein and into places beyond.

It's pretty unfortunate, the amount of good fantasy tropes being shunted aside because the designers were in too big of a rush to get this right. Shapeshifters, Little Folk...

Can someone please explain to me the need to rewrite the backstory on the old tried and true races anyway?

What is inherently broken with Tieflings and Halflings, etc? Its just backstory, which really does not have much gameplay impact. I had grown kind of partial to the original description for tieflings. If they wanted to create a new race, why not make somthing similar looking and give them a new name? Useful for consistency between versions at the very least.

They're working on druids. We'll see them, and the Races and Classes book talks about druids being shapeshifting focused.

Also, in the playtests we've seen a sorcerer turn into a giant snake, so.
