Words you learned through D&D

Dweomer .... well, that's the only one for me, really. Then again, I do not suffer from the disadvantage of having english as my native tongue.


[Edit: Ok, after having read the other entries, I'll admit to "doxy" and "fane" as well.]

Which is funny since Gygax invented the word Dweomer. There's a great article here that talks about all the neologisms EGG brought to the English language.

dweomer (found fairly recently I've mispronounced it for decades - mostly because it simply did not appear in dictionaries so as to LEARN its pronunciation)

It's a credit to Gygax, et.al. that even not knowing a great many of the words they used their intended meaning was often perfectly clear just from context eliminating the need to look them up in a dictionary at all.

Alot of the words already posted here, but then the monsters too!

I was a fan of Greek mythology long before i played D&D. Well, not that long, but creatures with names like a Medusa, and Pegasus, and Kraken and griffon and hydra were all familiar. So, i didn't learn THEM from D&D, but then there's bugbear, hobgoblin, troglodyte, lich, wight, ghast and a bunch of others that are in the dictionary. I learned years later that these were real words. At least you can see where the authors inferred their meaning. "Lich" refers often to a body, or a place associated with where dead are buried, like a "lich gate" or "lich wall".
