World/Campaign Setting Themes/Flavours

What is the flavour of your homebrew campaign setting/world?

Mine's kind of weird. It's composed of lots of things, depending on where you are.

Barsoom's a very straight-forward sort of High Fantasy Swords & Sorcery Medieval Renaissance Oriental Arabic Native American African Industrial Low Fantasy Other setting.

But I only voted because I wanted to vote pointlessly in a poll.

And why weren't there "Dinosaurs", "Lovecraftian Corruption" and "Lesbian Vampire Sorceresses" options in this poll?

Because a poll has a maximum of 20 options... ;) To be honest I was not sure which 20 to pick, I guess you cannot please everyone. There is always the 'other' option though.

Mine varies once every couple of months.

But right now the main thing is that it draws inspiration from monotheistic religious fantasy, including things like the Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, Kabbalism, Arabic poetry and folktale, and Orishic religions (such as Candomble, Santoria, and Vodun). It also includes "classical philosophy" from the Greeks and the Enlightenment, a general "mediterranean region" feel, and "tentacled horrors from beyond space and time".

Basically, I take Judaism, Islam, Christianity, and Oshiric religions, divest them of all their real-world trappings, re-interpret the world through their legends and beliefs, and slap on the idea of God as a machine and society and the Devil as Cthulhu and nature. So you have mechanical robot-angels singing calls to prayers from minarets built of gears and pistons, and horrible tentacled monstrosities stalking the dark woods of sin in the wild lands at the prehiphiary.

It's what a good fantasy world would be if people got over their resistance to including inspiration from some major real-world religions. :p

The campaign that I'm working on right now is a cross between Star Wars, X-Files, StarGate, and Urban Arcana. It's got the Force, Jedi, Magic, Aliens of all shapes and sizes, and lots of planet hopping.

My D&D campaign is High-Fantasy and Industrial. It takes a lot from Eberron and IK, and blends with with AE.

Everyone's pleased by Lesbian Vampire Sorceresses, though.

Not to mention Dinosaurs.

;)

Especially when one of the LVSes is a paleontologist called in to investigate reports of a 20 million year old sauropod skull with attachment scars for tentacles.
