World of Warcraft killed our gaming group!

It does sound a lot like Diablo 2: Killing monsters, looking for good gear, leveling up. And D2 I find boring as hell. I prefer D20. It's 10 times as good ;)

I don't buy it. Especially the drama part.

I'm sorry, dad, that I didn't turn out the way you wanted. :p

I'd prefer you not implying that I'm a racist for not playing the game. I might be okay with the book analogy, but leave racial matters out of the loop.

And you can hardly say that I'm judging it by its cover. I do judge it by its cover charge, though (I flat-out refuse to buy a game for 50 bucks only to keep paying them money so I can keep using the game I already paid for - especially since we're talking more than 10 bucks a month here). I judge it by the stuff I've been told about it, and by the way people turn out after they play. I don't say that all WoW players become like that, but all that I know of turned into bores that just couldn't shut up about their game. And not just the occasional remark, but talking the whole time.

In our gaming group we have started saying "WoW players - the guys even roleplayers look down to". ;)

I think it just comes down to your game probably sucked and WoW is more fun. ;)

I just started running a game using the WOW roleplaying book. As a running joke, I have three signs...a yellow exclamation point, a yellow question mark, and a blue question mark...that I hold up to signify NPCs with something for the PCs to do. But I started running the game not because my players were going to "leave" for WOW, but because I like the setting. They are actually a mixed party of slaves escaping from the underdark, and when they reach the surface they will be in the WOW world.

Yes, as if the Alliance didn't have enough problems, I shall be unleashing the Drow upon them as well. :D There is a dwarf, a gnome, a kobold (OK, not a WOW race, but I love kobolds so told the player it was OK!), a troll, and a forsaken. All but the forsaken were raised from birth as slaves and know nothing about the surface world. The Forsaken has amnesia and was captured by the Drow and knows nothing about what is going on. Part of his back story is that he actually has a piece of a cursed shard in his ribcage that the Liche King is looking for, so guess who else will be hunting down the party over the course of the campaign? So it will be much fun watching what happens as they go between Alliance and Horde areas, have drow slavers tracking them down, and minions of the Liche King randomly showing up to capture the forsaken.

So far, they prefer my game to WOW, because when I send them out to collect 10 dire bat fangs, they only need to kill 10 dire bats to do it, not fifty. And no farmers stealing their kills!

They ran the game. So you're saying that WoW players suck at dungeon mastering and real roleplaying in general?

Comparing someone to a racist because they don't like your game is just appalling.

Now now, people.. never once did I say anyone was a racist. I mentioned instances of judging things before giving them a shot, but not once did I imply anything of the like.

Though, while I didn't say you were a racist.. now that you think of it.. this comment..

Pretty much does clump a whole (large, I might add) group of people together in some distasteful judgement. Because we like a different game than you? That would be like someone who's into video games saying DnD players are nerds who have never had sex. Prejudice statements like that coming from someone who didn't want to be implied as a racist is rather... ironic.

My gaming groups have mostly been ruined by divorce, work, or the desire to go clubbing or camping instead of gaming. I and my friends pretty much play WoW and UO because we can't get enough people together to tabletop on any given night.

You're walking on pretty thin ice there. Watch your next steps very carefully.

It is meant pretty much ironic. There's a core of truth in it, though, since we find the behaviour of every single WoW player we know personally quite disgusting.

Because we like a different game than you?

No. Because they don't shut up about it. Because they ruin parties and gaming sessions with their endless blathering.

That would be like someone who's into video games saying DnD players are nerds who have never had sex.

Since we are all enthusiastic D&D and computer game players and have experienced this behaviour firsthand, it should be clear that we aren't quite serious about this.

Prejudice statements like that coming from someone who didn't want to be implied as a racist is rather... ironic.

So now WoW players are a race? Do you expect me to demand they wear an exclamationmark over their head on a hat so we can clearly identify them?

Maybe its more that DM'ing for you is a chore and it is more fun to play WoW? Did you consider that your playstyle could be the problem, or that you are obnoxious and it is more enjoyable to discuss WoW than engage you and some of the other players at the gaming table? Of course I have no clue how your group plays but you should really look at all the possible options.

Stand down, Kristivas. You know that sort of thing isn't anywhere near appropriate.

I only reluctantly interrupting your stream of insults, but as I said numerous times: I'm not the DM in this situation, the two culprits are.

The game I run as a DM has no attendance problems whatsoever.

Did you consider that your playstyle could be the problem

No. My style is impeccable. Plus in the past, they have reprimanded people for a style they didn't like.

or that you are obnoxious and it is more enjoyable to discuss WoW than engage you at the gaming table?

Of course not. I'm a veritable entity of light and they repeatedly wanted me to start playing, so they can bath in my wisdom more often.

Of course I have no clue

Truer words have never been spoken. :p

you should really look at all the possible options.

You mean I should reconsider murdering them in their sleep?

I leveled no insults, at least none worse than what you have said about WoW players in general which I assumed ware playful jabs anyway. I simply asked a question. Since I don't know you or how you play I think that you should consider examining all the possibilities rather than blaming a few millions lines of code for the failure of your gaming group.
