World War Z

I picked this up on a whim, and so far (I'm about a third of the way through) I love it. It reminds me of I Am Legend, which is an excellent story poorly executed. (As an aside, it's going to be a film in '07, according to IMDB, which is exciting. I hope they do it well, which in my case means "like the book.")

Anyway, I highly enjoy "realistic" vampire/zombie stories and that brings me to my point: does anyone have any suggestions? As I said, I thought I Am Legend was poorly written, but I loved the idea. So far, I like everything about World War Z. I have not picked up The Zombie Survival Guide, so I suppose that's on the list. Thanks in advance! :D

If you read comics, take a look at The Walking Dead. Very good zombie comic, particularly if you enjoy the characterization of people in a post-apocalyptic setting.

I got Worlld War Z for Christmas and enjoyed it immensely. There's one called 'Monster Island' that looks kinda fun, too, that showed up on the 'if you liked that, you might like this' link in Amazon.

Seonaid, just wanted to thank you for posting about this book. One of my friends had a copy at our New Year's party, and I read it while everyone else was playing drunken twister -- I'm all for drunken twister, but not when you're trying to actually fit 6 people on one board. Tsk tsk.

Anywho, I just finished it, and it's great. *grin*

I bought it for my dad for his birthday (he's a big Romero fan), picked it up to glance at it, and read it in one sitting. It really draws you in, and as a former historian, I really enjoyed the non-fiction-ish style.

A lot of people I know don't think too highly of it (especially those who know anything about the military and military hardware) though most have enjoyed the "Zombie Survival Guide". The main part that grated was the bit where the military is deployed against the zombies coming out of Long Island?

It was not well done and showed a very poor knowledge of military equipment and what it does. Even without getting into any obscure mechanical or tactical details, as one comment put it "65 ton tank @ 35 mph > Zombie horde."

Now he tried to write his way around this sort of thing by having the military being under stupid orders and such, but the fact is that he simply didn't do his homework, didn't think things through and was basically guilty of falling in love with his preconceived idea of how the events would happen.

Heh, I noticed that too. I decided to overlook the "Army ignores the fact that they have big, treaded, steel vehicles that lock from the inside" in favor of the story. Can't have everything, I guess. Still an enjoyable book, so far.
