[Worlds and Monsters] My sense of wonder is back

Heh.
Actually it is true of 2E also, though probably not at strongly.

The problem to me with 2nd Ed; was that it retained all of the crap rules from 1st Ed, but lost the vibe.

Saying that, it had some very innovative campaign settings (Spelljammer, Dark Sun, Planescape etc).

The images of the Feywild, Shadowfell and the information on the Raven Queen have given me so many ideas. I am actually starting to design the game world our group will use when 4e is released. Been sorting out domains for the 4e gods so we can play a bit in the world in 3e while we wait.

Am I the only one who noticed the "spelljammer" ship sailing the "Astra Sea" in the "Astral Dominion" art on p.17?

Me too. I was so very happy to see that. I cannot wait to see what they do with that. :D
As someone has already mentioned perhaps we will have Astral Jammers or something like that?

Yea!

There was an old Dragon article (1st Ed) that had an Astral Jammer type ship, and the captain was Peregrine (Sp?).

I noticed that as well, and it made me totally stoked. The way I look at it, the Astral Sea can incorporate both old "transitive" settings, Planescape and Spelljammer.
Sweet. You can imagine now that in the Astral Sea (between the various Dominion Spheres) are the floating remnants of old Dominions. Bits of rock and rubble, some larger than others, on which various communities have found purchase. Chief among them, those friendly to civilized races at any rate, are Sigil and Babylon 5 the Rock of Bral. Also sailing this Astral Sea are Githyanki pirates and Neoghi raiders. Somewhere, out beyond the Rim, is the rumored "home" of the Mindflayers, marking the spot where they first crossed over from the Far Realm they originally came from.

Dang, dogg; I just thought of this: At heroic tier, you get a ship. At paragon, you enchant that ship to fly. At epic level, you install at spelljamming helm and sail the Astral Sea.
I don't know about you, but if I'm playing an Spelljammer campaign I am not waiting until 20th level before I get my own ship.

Hehe, you have your ship at first level. It just isn't a Spelljammer campaign until 20th. Before that it's regular and then flying boat action.

Astral Ships were around 2e's Astral Plane as well (githyanki pirates hunting giant astral whales). I don't remember if they were mentioned in 3e, but if they were, no one made that big of a deal about them. :)

I just wanted to say that art does not affect the quality of the new edition at all.
It does if art is important to you.

I happen to be one such person. I buy Warmachine books just for the artwork, since I'm not really interested in playing that game at all, for instance.

Good artwork can make the worst game worth having.

Um, no. If it's going to be a Spelljammer Campaign, it's going to be a Spelljammer Campaign at 1st level, not 21st level. To do otherwise would be like "Hey guys, let's play a Planescape Campaign! But first, you have to grind your way up to 15th Level so you can Plane Walk!"

To repeat: Um, no.

Admittedly, you may not own your own Spelljammer right at 1st level, but you're sure as shootin' in the Astral Sea on someone's Spelljammer.

/end off topic/

I'm glad the art of W&M has inspired some folks. I didn't get it, but maybe I'll have to thumb through it at Barnes & Noble to see if it's worth the purchase. I definitely need to check out pg. 17

Please do. The artwork is wonderful and actually makes me want to start DM'ing again for our group. I pretty much always play.
