I think that the Hero's guidebook or whatever it was called that came out early 3.0 was pretty bad for anyone but a very, very, basic beginner.

The only one I own and never use is Deities and Demigods, and I have run an Epic-level game. I actually do use the Hero Builder's Guidebook for two purposes: introducing new players to the possibilities (it's not terrible at this, although not good by any stretch) and picking names. I suck at names, and as a DM I have to come up with a lot, and it's great for that.

Hero Builder's Guidebook. The splat books should have had half the page count they had, but they had uses. The HBG, OTOH ... for new players who wanted to waste even more money for a little help, help they would not need in 6 months.
 

Oriental Adventures. Instead of giving us the tools to create oriental adventures or to emulate Wuxia-films, they bore us to death with a lame re-interpretation of an existing campaign-setting.
A section about roleplaying in fantasy-japan would have been fine, but half the book is dedicated to that.
I want CHINA, SIAM, INDIA... where were they? some feats and classes is all we get? sheesh.
 

You know... I wonder if the Book of Challenges low marks are a reflection of its limited audience (game masters) or due to poor execution.

I did a review for the book some time ago (for Gaming Report and Dicefreaks) and I found the book to be one of the best game aids for DMs this side of the Dungeon Master's Guide.

I'm curious to know what some of you think about BoC...

For me, it's a toss-up between the Arms & Equipment Guide, Deities & Demigods, and the Book of Vile Darkness. I don't think I'll ever get any use of of these three.

... except for the NIPPLE CLAMPS OF EXQUISITE PAIN! Truly, these are the iconic vile items, and I will pimp the NIPPLE CLAMPS OF EXQUISITE PAIN every chance I get. There is nothing else that sums up so beautifully -- so EXQUISITELY, even -- the essence of vileness that Monte and friends have distilled for us. No campaign could ever be complete without allowing the NIPPLE CLAMPS OF EXQUISITE PAIN to make an appearance. Put these in your game, and I guarantee that your players will be thinking, "here's a guy who knows what a dungeon is REALLY all about!"
