Worst miniature paint job evAr! Get it off the table!

So we've got a dork in the group who feels it's his lot in life to try to make practical jokes of everything in the game. Well, he's gone too far. I made him take his mini off the table and told him to get a new one and paint it up seriously. He used a pink and yellow, smear-painted ape. It looked like the crap that runs out of the bottom of a moldy snow cone and it was GLOSSY! Big yellow beady eyes and he painted the groin to look like the "monkey" had wet himself and glued two BB's to the you-know-what..but it was smeared to look like some kind of pus-like discharge. Of course, the ape mini wouldn't even stand up because of the uncut seam on the bottom!

We have a table rule (made by the group) that everyone have a real miniature that stands up and is painted. Well, he was all pissed because he says he can't paint miniatures, but I think he went too far in trying to make a mockery of the game. It was the equivalent of not bringing your character sheet or using a die or penny for a character when everyone else goes out of their way to contribute to the game in a positive way. He's got a box full of mini's and we keep paint at the table for people that want to touch up or even paint during the game. Heck, other people have even offered to paint one up for him.

Was I wrong to ask him to take it off the table? At what point does a DM need to do this? Do you guys have rules like that? Is the guy just being an idiot to push the groups' buttons?

You did what a DM should do when it has to be done. Such a player ruins the game for the others. I say he has a problem if he comes to play and at the same time mocks up the game. Or maybe he should really try to find a game of "Munchkin d20 RPG".

Myself (as a DM) I never saw a situation like that, however many times I got players who come up with silly names for their characters. As such, I veto whatever doesn't sound appropriate (submitting them a list to choose from if they don't have ideas).

While his actions are out of line, I think the table rule you mentioned should be taken into consideration. His actions, while juvenile and inappropriate, were an apparent rebellion against the table rule of having a painted mini. Apparently, he disagrees with the rule and may feel inadequate that he doesn't have the painting skills of others at the table. The offer of someone else doing the paint job for him isn't necessarily a solution, but rather an unintentional put down of his lack of ability.

A more constructive solution may then be a few tips, pointers, or instruction by the best mini painter at the table. Maybe devote a full session to minis painting, guiding him through the process.

Or change the rule. Let him bring in a WoTC prepainted mini, or use an unpainted one.

I gotta agree with crazypixie- If it were me, I'd probably do something similar. I can't paint, I hate painting, and consider the whole thing a waste of time and money (for me, if other people enjoy it- all power to them).

Why does what the mini looks like have ANY effect on the game? I had a character who due to time, budget, and talent restraints use a quarter for his miniature for 2 years straight- when everyone else had a painted mini in some way. It didn't detract from the game in ANY way- other that the character developed the nickname 'Silver'

I guess if the rest of the group is annoyed- then don't play with him, but of all things to lose a member of an RP group over- this seems like one of the most inane (considering the whole game is based on imagination anyway- and we live in a world where pre-painted minis are a dime a dozen).

Yeah, that's pretty much the thing that set me off. He's clearly being jerky for jerkiness' sake, in spite of solutions and even friendly offers. I don't like jerks who jerk without a well-founded reason. My opinion 'bout your decision is clear, no?
