WotC boards (slighty ranty...)

I think the WizOs do a damned fine job under incredibly difficult circumstances. People should thank them because the boards wouldn't be there at all if they didn't step up to do their jobs.

PAID jobs, I might add ...

I dont "thank" anyone for doing his PAID job.

I can say I posted there for a long time and I was a heavy poster during WizO_Jedi days was lead.

The boards were pretty decent back then, sure there was the ocasional troll and flame war but things moved along and their Meta Board rarely got a complaint.

Then WizO_Paradox taken over ... and WizOs start to get pay checks ...

Some might feel that I have something against that moderator but I my contact with his moderation was his close a tread that was then re-open ...

There are better places in there, the Modern and Star Wars forums are very well moderated but the D&D area ... I seen it a LOT better.

I rarely post there now and in truth if we want info we are far better off in here that in WizOs forums.

That, sir, is rude. Thanking someone for doing their job is common courtesy. Just because they are paid doesn't make the job any more enjoyable, especially with people who flame and make personal attacks (seen here on the second post).

As a member of the online community and being aquatinted with Paradox during his time as a chat room wizo, I know that he has to deal with a lot of bunk from inconsiderate people. The fact that they are getting paid does not make any difference; if you don't like them talk with the uber-WizOs. It has been my experience, that WotC has been rather heavy handed with WizOs. Paradox must be doing something right to have been kept on.

The wizards board and the wizards chat rooms are two very different places. I find the boards here on ENworld to be better than those on WotC, due mostly to the people who post here. WotC's boards amount to a big pile of steamy nastiness, a cesspool of flaming and foul-mouthedness (is that a word?).

I do find the wizards chat room to be a cut above ENworld's in moderation and variety. The Wizos in the chat rooms are often very friendly and have changed only slightly in the two years I've been over there. It could be that they have an entire site with many different rooms, or it could be the people or events that occur; regardless, it is very clean and a fun place to be.

Yes, the moderators are partly to blame I suppose, but the fact that they are a company and not a fan site/news site like ENworld changes the ideological expectations for a forum. Here there is a very plain code of conduct; its straight forward and has always been under the discretion of the mods. Wizards has to appeal to a larger clientele base. Being a company, their boards also exicute a marketing function, which may influence the line which the WizOs have drawn in the forum sand (something that should not be looked down upon, seeing as they are a business).

In short, the moderators on the wizards boards do not have the freedom the mods on ENworld do. Take it easy on them.

Oh really?

I dont thank people from doing their paid jobs because they get paid ... monetary compensation for their work.

Call it rude if you want, fact is I dont give a damn about what people think of my opinions ... they asked them, they get then.

WizOs get paid, its their job to moderate those forums and so I require a highter standart from a proffesional work of what is basic volunteer work.

Dont like it .... tough, I stop changing my opinions in favor of others a hell of a long time ago and I dont intend to go back or lie about it.

And last, I made NO REFERENCE to their chat rooms (something I never use, be it WotC chat rooms, EN World chat room) or any chat rooms since I dont like chat rooms) but I can say this I DID register to using their chat rooms around the time I was still in FR setting for one of Ed Greenwood chat and I am STILL waiting for my log in information ... so I hold no opinion of their chat rooms besides that their registration system leaves a lot to be desired from my experience.

PS.

No, I am not talking to the WizOs about what I think about their moderation since I dont own WotC forums nor am I in such place that I am required to moniter their behavior and last because I serious doubt my opinion in such matters will have any weight so why would I bother.

IIRC WizO's get paid about USD7.00 an hour and are expected to do do 2-8 hours a week of moderation.

When they were advertising last time I did consider applying, after all I am on the boards most days and I have a reasonably thick skin :). But then I did the maths that the money would cover broadband + Decent AV Software + Firewall Software + regular updates to software and to be honest I don't if I could really cope with the amount of viruses and email questioning my heritage, my attitude toward my wife or my sexually orientation towards men, women, children or animals, often with pictures.

If you don't agree with a partcular moderator on a topic you can take your complaint up via email with Paradox, who is in-charge of the moderator or WotC_Mel who is in overall charge of the baords.

That ain't much...

...even seems like less without a "thank you"...

Drakron, I must say that your post appears to be the most inflamatory one I've seen in a long time. I must apologize in advance, because I find your tone so offensive, I might have a difficult time keeping my own thoughts in check. However, if I may offer a counter point to your opinion, hopefully without being insulting or degrading.

If a person recieves money for their actions, that does not mean that they are not worthy of praise for their actions. Indeed, the fact that some people do honest work for honest pay may well be the mark of highest praise in some opinions. Further, the idea that we should not encourage those who are good at their jobs, or support those who have difficult jobs, lacks basic compassion and good sense. Those who have thankless jobs and are abused for them will often quit and leave, leaving the job undermanned, and often the service will disappear or suffer greatly. For example, a pilot relies on Air Traffic Controllers to separate them and their passengers from other airplanes. This is an amazing stressful and thankless job, dealing with high-strung personalities that need instant feedback and excellent service. The turnover rate is immense, and although the best ones are worth their weight in gold and sometimes (emphasis on sometimes) adequately paid, many experienced controllers move out of center and the tower just because they can't deal with the stress of keeping thousands of people safe each day. As a pilot, I make it a point to say "thank you" when I sign off on the radio. Because monetary compensation doesn't cover what these people put into their jobs.

Other jobs are paid as a "thank you." Many positions recieve a small stipend as a way of saying "we appreciate your work, and here's a small sum to pay for the gas you spent driving here." My wife had such a position at a NPO for a long time. She was always thanks by those she helped, and not one of them said, "well, they paid for her gas and lunch, so screw it, she's just doing the minimum."

Other people are underpaid for the abuse they take. I've seen so many waitresses, clerks, and blue collar professions dressed down by a paying customer just because they felt dissatisfied with the service for which they were paying a dollar. My personal favorite story was when I saw a lawyer, who had just billed a thousand dollars to a customer for having his intern do research, went to get something to eat and berated the waitress for being too slow to take his order. He then talked about the work ethic in America. But that's another story.

Now, I'm sorry if I've been overly passionate or inflammatory, you guys should read what I erased. Please take care.

Things could be worse...anyone remember the old TSR iChat boards? ;)

Those boards were so clunky, I ended up establishing my first website, on which to run my message-based game.
