WOTC Business Strategy and miniatures

I started without minis and played that way for ~5 years. Then I got ahold of some Cardboard Heroes and never went back.

Looooove minis. Haaaaate no-minis.

D&D's ancestor was minitature-based wargaming, and as such, I don't think you're ever going to get away from it.

If you want a completely abstracted system, Tunnels and Trolls can still be found on a few shelves -- that does the job and leaves practically everything to your imagination!

Yep...

I've used Mini's since 1e... My mother had an old vinyl table cloth with 1 inch square check pattern on it... we'd use all those extra 6 sided dice to define the room....

Then battlemats came along, and made things so much easier...

Now I'm making 3d dungeons with Hirst Arts blocks!

I could see the argument that mini's are uncessary through 2nd edition. But with Third edition, I just don't see how you arbitrate AoO without a map and counters/mini's. Its just arbitrary otherwise.

I see some creativity being "stifled", but then again, it was people who were tring to do things that beant the rules (I get a boost from the 1/2 orc barbarian and jump over the attackers into combat.... errrr... what?)

I hate to make judgement calls when it comes to spell effects and AoO. If htey see the grid, see their opponents, they can make decisions about their actions, and suffer/take advantage of the circumstances.
