If you go hybrid recharge, one possibility is to have the type that is per level be the 'save a character's rear end' type. They aren't useful for anything but ensuring that death doesn't happen. (But allow the possibility of the character suffering long-term impairment as a result) However, for all other uses, there is a second type that are handed out a little more often. Maybe a pool of 5+Cha mod (good way of making high charisma useful for players who aren't paladins, clerics w/ turning feats, sorcerors, social rogues, and bards) that are refreshed every few days or encounter. This way, it encourages players to do interesting actions but allows them to still save their own butts when they really want to.
