Maybe the rogue was meant to get an Aid Another from someone? That would give him the +10 he'd need to find the trap by Taking 20.

There's an interesting question - since you require the Rogue's Trapfinding class ability to find traps with a Search DC above 20, is it possible for a character lacking that ability to use Aid Another to help you?

In any event, I don't think good design should require that sort of thinking to allow the Rogue to do his job. I suspect the disparity between the Search DC and the Rogue's maximum achievable result was rather due to the adventure and the characters being designed seperately and without reference to one another.

Looking at CR 5 and 6 traps in the DMG gives the impression that a Search DC of 30 is on the very high end of the scale for that level. That marks it as a tough trap to be throwing at PCs. Now, that's fine, since I wouldn't suggest everything should be easy. However, if this is the only time the Rogue gets to shine by using his special skills (no other traps, no secret doors, no locks to open) then that Search DC becomes excessive.

All IMO, of course.

I ended up going to the Hollywood one hosted by Wizards of the Coast. It was also the announcement party for the DnD fan film festival awards (the Dungeon Majesty dude was there, and won the prize for his rocking dnd music video ;) Hal Sparks (who games, apparently ) was hosting with another guy who was very familiar, but I don't know his name (he is in that Staples commercial with the 'I'll leave this ink cartridge for the ink fairy...) - Brian something?

Anyway, it was at the Level 3 club (nice choice, I think) and was pretty cool. Nobody told me I was supposed to bring a 500 point warband to do the dragon smackdown thing they had, so I just did a minis demo and scored a free boster.

I played the Paladin in the adventure, and was killed by the Magma Hurler (went to -18 HP in one shot from like half health as soon as I opened the door because the rogue had tipped them off and they readied) - one of the most brutal PC deaths ever ;) The party went on to TPK in style with the hellcat.

..oh - and I did think it was silly to have a Paladin with no Charisma bonus. I couldn't even lay on hands. It was pretty darn fun overall though.

I participated.

Actually, over here we had the Game Day a day early, on Friday, because on Saturday was our local equivalent of Halloween, which is a very somber and depressing occasion and all the stores are closed.

I had fun, even though we TPK'd in the Curse of the Gethin Abbey and our local RPGA rep didn't get enough players to run the Living Greyhawk adventure he'd planned. The spirit of the group was good, and I got cool loot.

I also got to play a couple of games of DDM, one of which didn't end in a complete, ignominous defeat.
