My guess on how this really plays out: They start to 'restore the depth of rules from prior editions' - meaning add complexity to the game. This complexity will be of the type that a VTT can handle for you with complex tables and sequential rolling. This will encourage players to use VTT over Pen and Paper - and that is where they'll go after the coin. They'll sell virtual assets, subscription services, etc... to provide miniatures, terrain, rules packages, etc... And they'll try to do it in ways that force everyone at the game table, not just the DM, to pay up.
