[WOTC] Minis Spotlight

You do realize that, with only 8 random minis in a booster pack, it'd take you forever to actually get sets of 10 or 12 orcs, goblins, kobolds, hobgoblins, lizardmen, etc., and cost you a large chunk of cash? Of course, people might trade them, but not if they're going to actually be in demand among DMs, as you think they will.
What, now you're saying there won't be enough commons in a pack? ;)

I think most DMs will probably buy a few random packs, then round out whatever else they need by buying singles from the resale market. And yes, there will be one! I wouldn't be surprised if SVGames puts up singles for sale at $.50-$10 or so, the very same week the booster packs become readily available...

I think it's cool. I have sort of a massive collection of miniatures already- a veritable horde of orcs, goblins, and kobolds, and a lot of assorted skeletons and undead. I also have a fair nuber of characters and weird guys. You know what my problem is? Finishing painting them. Filling out a few extra random dudes wil be fun, and the randomness doesn't bother me. You never know when your'e going to need something weird.

The paint jobs look ok on these but I'll hit them with some drybrushing and detailing. I have had good luck doing a bit of drybrushing and detailing on Mage-Knight figures, and I'm pretty sure this will be the same deal, without all the trouble of chopping the bases off. It improves them enormously.

The true secret to getting the most out of miniatures is having some nice scenery, and playing in three dimensions. Nice scenery (aquarium pieces or rocks or Armorcast or whatever) can make even lousy-painted miniatures look great. Playing in three dimensions, using elevations, hills, cover, and whatnot also adds a dimension to tactical gameplay and makes fight scenes more exciting.

They're so good, they're crap-tastic!

This is disgraceful:

It is quite pathetic, especially when you compare some of them to the Chainmail minis they were based on, and consider that the quality and level of detail of Chainmail was never that great to begin with...

Does anyone know if they're being made from the same crappy, bendy rubber-like stuff they use for HeroClix stuff, that makes for L-shaped swords you can never get to stay straight?

out of the 21 PC figs -- one dwarf and seven elves??

why do i feel like i'm being discriminated against? :D ;)

[edit]
just for reference, out of the 21 "PCs" in the gallery:

humans: 7
elves: 7
halflings: 2
half-orcs: 2
dwarves: 1
gnomes: 1
tieflings: 1
half-elves: 0

Do you all realise that.....

This is a game all it's own with a seperate rulebook? This isn't D&D 3e (or 3.5e) it is the D&D miniature game. It comes with stat cards like the Heroclix bases. This is WotC's Mage Knight, not Miniatures for you to use at your weekly D&D campain.

So quit your crying.

Okay, I'll bite.

The paint jobs look awful. Given a bit of time I could paint something a lot better than these. These minis just look like they were painted by colour blind leper dwarves.

Not buying it.

the question is not could you paint 1 well could you paint 50 an hour well and consistency.

The clever thing about hero clix is the fact that you dont need a card or anything else. the stats are right there. I personally don't think it is that good a game (but maybe I have not played enough to know). But I do think the idea of telling you how far a man moves, how hard he hits ect was very good

Do YOU realize that you just made a complete fool of yourself, because it was always marketed as BOTH a new game and D&D minis for a "weekly game" - and that it's represented that way in the press release linked to in the first post in this thread? I guess your time to make a name for yourself on the boards will have to wait...

Well, I don't have the time or inclination to paint even one single miniature. Not going to happen. So I was thrilled to hear there would be cheap prepainted minis since otherwise I will use only counters. I was very dissapointed to hear they are randomly packaged. The arguments used for the random packaging sound pretty stupid to me. I'd rather they sold the rare minis for more money if they cost them more to make than the more numerous commons. I also don't have the time or inclination to trade minis. But if a secondary market takes shape at the WOTC store in town or another easily accessible hobby store, then I'll get them. They look good enough to use, since I'm comparing them to counters and not to a theoretical mini painted by me which is never going to exist 'cause I'm not going to ever paint one.
