WotC Official PDF versions - would you buy them?

Actually a really good idea. I would consider doing just that, if the extra cost involved in sending money in a foreign currency to an overseas destination wasn't so high.

Instead I guess I just buy fewer books.

Be careful of taking advice about copyright from those who have a vested interest in narrowing copyright. That Stanford site is probably one of the most reputable and neutral sites you'll find, short of digging around the Copyright Office itself (which has more dry law and less interpretation in practice).
