WoTC should discount the 3.5 edition books for existing customers.

Hello all,

This may have been hashed out before(appologies in advance) but I have not seen anything on this topic so I will start off by saying that I feel WoTC should discount(say maybe 25%-40%) the 3.5 edition core rule books for customers who can prove they have purchased the original 3.0 core rule books. This seems fair to me as people bought the original books in good faith, that they were play tested correctly and with diligence, but now seem to be out of date and/or rules have been clarified or even changed all together. Now as this seems to be in conjunction with players giving feed back to WoTC shouldn't those players be rewarded some way. What do all of you ENWorlders think ? and how would you feel if you just bought somthing recently only for it to be the incorrect version and then have to shell out full price again. It would not be as bad if they released just one book with all the corrections and/or updates eg. Unearthed Arcana, but having to pay for all three I think is a bit much. Now that does not mean that I won't eventually buy the other 3 core rule books anyway but it is a little galling to say the least. This might be an excellent opportunity for an entrepeneaur to organize a deal with WoTC to specialise in selling discounted 3.5 books to customers who can prove they purchased the 3.0 books and maybe even try and recyle(somehow ??) the old 3.0 versions too !!! Any thoughts ?? Cheers all :)

The vast majority of 3.5 books during the first six months or so will be purchased by existing players, those who own the 3.0 books. Where would they make any money to pay for the new revised edition?
It's not like they are as big as Microsoft, who can get it right the first time. :D

....hmm...sigh !!!

Well I suppose there are other economics to think of but it was just a thought really and maybe a topic for debate. Unfortunately, we don't have "Wal-Mart" in the UK yet, even though they do own a big chain of supermarkets over here now, they don't sell the full range of stuff "Wal-Mart" does. Bummer !! even bigger "sigh" as I really liked shopping there when I lived in the USA. :D

Damn, beat me to it. Gotta admit the SRD is pretty cheap though.

How, exactly, could someone prove they bought the 3E books? I could walk into a store with 6 copies of the PH plus 3 of the DMG and MM. That doesn't mean I bought any of them. And who would save a sales reciept from 3 years ago? Also what about us that bought a few of the books used? Or is this going to be on the *snicker* honour system?

I did not say No Pay, just a Discount!!!

I never mentioned "not paying" just a "discount" for people who have already purchased the 3.0 books recently. Say in the last 6 months, with valid receipt and maybe only at the same store of original purchase. If you went by a PC analogy as in the previous post, then your "old" Intel Processor would have been at a cheaper price to begin with, when you bought it, as opposed to the new ones coming out in say in the next 2 months. They would not be the same price or more expensive ? The new 3.5 books will be the same price if not more expensive than the original 3.0 books. Maybe WoTC could have slashed the prices of the original core books nearer the release date of the newer 3.5 core books ??? I am aware that WoTC has to make money and turn profit etc...and I am aware of the economics involved with upgrades to existing products but this is not what I was getting at. I was merely tring to suggest a way of getting more interest in "upgrading" to the next set of books, when one has only recently purchased the original set of books. :)

Well, number one, it ain't gonna happen.

Number two, if you order online, you can get 'em pretty cheap.

Number 3, the SRD is free, if you're on a budget.

Number 4, it ain't gonna happen.

I'm pretty sure it'll be worth the money to most of us.

But I sympathize.

#5: If you're going to give up a big chunk of revenue to get existing customers to upgrade, it's much more fun to hire burly men to beat them up and take their old books away than it is to give them a discount on buying new books.

I mean, if you're going to be called an "evil capitalist", you might as well be an EVIL! Capitalist...

(<i>Edit: the "evil capitalist" bit is generic silliness, not a reference to a previous post.</i>)

cheers,
