WoTC should discount the 3.5 edition books for existing customers.

You don't have to buy them.

My FLGS manager was having a minor rant yesterday, he has pre-ordered his stock of 3.5e but so far he has not had one customer say that they are going to upgrade, or anyone in the resident gaming group.

My old gaming group is going to stick with 3.0, they will download the 3.5 srd and have a look. Eventually they will created there own house copy of what they are going to use from both editions . Nobody in the group has any long term plans to upgrade.

Sure, that's what folks say now... and I'm sure some will actually stick to it and not get the new books. But I'm betting that after the new books come out and everyone starts oohing and ahing, that most of the people who say they won't upgrade will cave in and pick up at least the revised PHB.

I think I must be the antithesis of the average d20 RPG buyer.

I'm glad they're putting out a 3.5 so I have some new goodies to buy and read. I think the idea of them giving a discount is nonsensical unless they thought that the books wouldn't sell without one (which they clearly don't).

As a side note:

My opinion of Arcana Unearth's prospects plummetted when Monte began introducing his campaign-specific "alternative" classes and races. I don't want a Monte Cook campaign book. I was looking forward to a different magic system and some different approaches to rules (in short, an "alternative Player's Handbook"). That's clearly not what he's written.

That, combined with the rather poor balance of most of his other stuff (cool ideas but with spells like bolt of conjuration, chains of vengeance, et al, I have to wonder at his playtesting base) make it unlikely in the extreme that I'll pick up that book.

But I've already ordered 3.5 from Talon, and I'll continue to house rule to my heart's content.

Oh, who am I kidding? I'll probably buy AU, too. I am such a junkie.

Good Points guys....

Thanks for the Link "Zaruthustran" and good point to both you and "Dismas" regarding the prospects of even having to buy the 3.5 books in the first place......But I have failed my "Will Save" with a natural "1" against WoTC's Spell of Compellment, so must scrape together my remaining GP and offsky to ye olde DnD Shoppe and maybe try and "Bluff" myself a deal on all three new 3.5 Books.....hehehe !!! Cheers guys ;) !!!

Yep, I totally agree. The owner of the shop I go to says the attitude of a given gamer goes through these stages:

"Never! Never never never!"
"No."
"Probably not."
"I need to look at it first."
"Probably will."
"Definitely."
"Love it!"
"A new edition?!? Never! Never never never!"
etc.

LOL, he's got that pretty much right on :)

I don't think I've ever been in the Never, Never, Never group... Come to think of it, I feel that way about the "Book of Erotic Fantasy". Let's hope I don't end up in the "Love it!" category when it comes out...

The big question for me and for my old group is where is the incentive to buy 3.5?

Club had a vote about whether to upgrade the game to 3.5 and decided against it, they will take another vote in 9 months. In the meantime the SRD is available so they will browse that.

This isn't just a WotC after or money backlash, we have between us enough new / never played games and accessories to last the next 10 years based on the amount of time we currently game. Nothing in 3.5 screams must have!

Good Point...again !!!

Yeah, I agree, our group is the same and we would still be playing our "new" and "not even looked at" stuff for the next 10 years too, to fully appreciate all they have to offer. However, I suggest you all roll d20's in "9 Months" to see if you all pass your will saves and don't end up going to buy the 3.5 stuff anyway...hehehe !!!

I paid for my 3.5 last month. Looking forward to it. On discounts...I agree with most the others. gaming is a hobby...ya dont need it. Discounts are for used books, not new ones. If low on funds..there are lots of places that give you credit for your used games. Trade in those beat up 3e phbs.

Now if only we could get Microsoft ot give me a discount on Halo 2...I got halo...they should give me a discount right?

I feel WoTC should discount(say maybe 25%-40%) the 3.5 edition core rule books for customers who can prove they have purchased the original 3.0 core rule books. This seems fair to me as people bought the original books in good faith, that they were play tested correctly and with diligence, but now seem to be out of date and/or rules have been clarified or even changed all together.
Puff-puff-give, man. Puff-puff-give. You're f-cking up the rotation!
