D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Except someone literally just contradicted that statement earlier. So I don’t know what else to say to you about the issue you’re having.
Again, if you think one is a lot, I think that perhaps we're having a miscommunication. A single dragonborn in an entire module of dozens and dozens of NPC's is hardly a lot, is it?

Here is an interesting question I had not thought of: does either LevelUp or ToV have a bespoke setting mae for those 5E games? I know Kobold has their Midgard setting, but I believe that setting was originally created for Pathfinder or 3.5 (I think).
Level Up sort of does use its setting(s) which are expressed through available character options. But they weren't created for 5e afaik, since iirc they were made for earlier editions.

Their Voidrunners Codex might count though?
 

I could possibly see Nerath as a "from the ashes" type setting, but you'd have to walk a fine line to avoid it being grimdark. I still wish we had gotten a consolidated book before 4e burnt out.
It seems that wouldn't be that hard to avoid grimdark, because the setting just doesn't describe any large despotic empires oppressing the formerly free, unified people. But it does describe points of lights, so clearly in some areas, good people do good deeds, stand for each other and secured a decent home. But they are isolated, and travel between them is treacherous, monsters roam the world. If someone was to unite the evil forces, they could probably swallow those points of lights - but equally possible, if the points of lights can establish connections and drive back those monsters, they could exand and make the world a better place.
 


A 5.5e setting would have:

  • Aasimar NPCs who can self heal
  • Dragonborn NPCs with breath weapons
  • Dwarf NPCs who have 20% more HP
  • Elf NPCs who have attack cantrips
  • Gnome NPCs who have Advantages on Mental saving throws
  • Goliath NPCs who have a giant attack
  • Halfling NPCs who can errr
  • Human NPCs who have an additional attack
  • Orc NPCs who can dash as a bonus action
  • Tiefling NPCs who have Fire Bolt and Hellish Rebuke

Aasimar and Orc warriors close in while Elf and Tiefling ping from afar.

5.5e would be great for a RPG setting with a Squad War game tie in. Age of Sigmar but D&D. High fantasy faction based wargaming.

Well, that is a matter of public record, that was actually one of the rules of the Setting contest: each entry had to include everything in 3.5 explicitly. So for Eberron, it's assumptions are built around stuff like 3.5 magic item rules.

Still works in 5E fine.

Unless you expect the PCs to spend most of their time fighting non-human NPCs rather than monsters, this is largely irrelevant.
 

The new setting has to offer something new, fresh or original, something than 3PPs haven't showed yet.

An idea is a setting inspired in "the Vortex of Madness" where an alien machine used to try heal the mandess not always work so well, creating bizarre and surreal demiplanes.

My suggestion is some spin-off or spiritual succesor of DS where players could use player options from different sourcebooks, without the banning of classes and PC species from 2nd Ed.

I think that’s the thing with a rule set specific setting. If the rules change substantially, it could make for some dramatic shifts that make a new setting worthwhile. I’m trying to think about what shifts in 5e to 5.5 or even 3.5 to 5.5 would warrant a new setting by virtue of the rules alone. Like you said, a few updates in any of the settings like Eberron and it works fine.
