WOTC's 3-5 year plan

Hi there NeghVar mate!

Is that 'NeghVar as in the Klingon flagship? I am a big fan of the Way of the Warrior DS9 episode myself...in fact its the only one I own.

Add the DMG 2 to that list. I recall Monte speaking about the possibility of one some time ago.

Unearthed Arcana was a sort of DMG 2 though wasn't it? Or rather it had new PHB; DMG and D&Dg stuff in it.

Personally, I think even a large scale miniature wargame wouldn't be a good idea. While a decent percentage of gamers would be interested, I'm sure there is an even bigger number that would not be interested. And, there are some that will just use their Warhammer armies to play out those large scale battles. Plus, Warhammer already has a good hold on the market? Why switch?

Now, if Wizards had a nice d20 rulebook for mass combat, it would be great, as that would allow folks like me that have accumulated a couple of decent sized Warhammer fantasy armies to use them in a D&D game, instead of having them look pretty while we game. And, a wargamer who plays Warhammer would be able to play another wargame with his/her minis and may get interested in D&D that way...

Mature Themes...hell yeah, but not goofy stuff. I seem to recall a certain lycanthropic miniature line wherein a specific mini was wielding a revolver with a grossly enlarged phallus. That was dumb.

The revolver had a phallus? Talk about redundancy!

I am all for Dieties and Demigods 2, if it doesn't have all the cheesey earth dieties in it, I want NEW shyte!

Historical Settings...blahbity blah blah. Hated 'em. DnD is about fantasy.

Wow. We are so totally on opposite ends of the spectrum that it's not funny.

(Actually, it is kinda funny... :D)

I won't buy a Di&De2 if it's got all made-up gods. I can make up my own gods, thanks. What I want is more info on historical pantheons from Earth, like all the cool ones from the original Di&De that didn't make it into the first printing of the new one. And more rules on religions and churches, too.

As far as historical stuff, I love settings that capture a certain element of history. It doesn't make it any less fantasy. Sometimes I want to play in a Roman Empire style setting, or a Celtic setting, or a Viking setting, instead of the traditional "It's sort of like medieval Western Europe but not really" sort of setting. Heck, sometimes I want to play in an actually Western European style setting.

Doesn't mean I want the games actually set on Earth, just modeled after these civilizations. And I'd be far more likely to buy these than I am to buy into the yearly campaign settings.

I think most of these wonderful ideas will never make it out of WotC.

Lady Dragon suggested 10 books a year? That seems like a lot to me. I wouldn't be surprised if WotC leaned more to less development than more.

I think FR will continue to be supported, as will the new setting contest winner. Other than that, I don't foresee a huge number of new ideas coming out. They really should do a mass combat ruleset, and I think they should make minis of things unique to D&D (frex, I really want a good displacer beast). If it were me, I'd license out the name a bit more. Granted you have to find people willing to pay for it, but getting someone else to assume the risk for a new campaign setting sounds like good business to me.

I really don't see how they'll be able to revise 3E without major heartache. There are sooooo many third party publishers out there creating momentum for 3E that I think it would be very difficult to get people to buy into a 4E concept.

In short, I think WotC is going to be far less ambitious that people think.

PS

Do it the Marvel way!

Simply milk the DND licence for every penny in other more profitable markets, such as games, movies and television. And then pray for a breakout success to ride the franchise a little longer and hopefuly bring in larger audience for the core product so that the bean counters don't decide to do more downsizing.

"But the FR movie made $60 million dollars!"

"Sorry, you only sold 90,000 Donut Core books. We'll have to downsize you."

"But that leave only Gnome Bob to run WoTC!"

"That's okay, we've got an extra desk he can use right next to ours."

"Suddenly, I'm glad to be leaving."

I would love a D20 version of Ars Magica, doesn't wizards own that game.

A D20 Mass Combat system (what they had originally planed for chainmail)

A setting for the ELH would make a lot of since (or is that called the FR)?

I would love a good hard sci-fi book which is set in say 2100 and not the far future. Like Transhuman is for GURPS

also I would make a generic D20 book Gurps D20

Mind you this is a wish list not a prediction
