WotC's release schedule Jan - Apr ´08. 4th Edition?

WotC has shown they can design a strictly-better d20 rulesset than 3.5 without making it incompatible with a majority of 3.5 crunch: Star Wars Saga.

Strictly-better? In some peoples' opinion, sure. In others', definitely not. And among those who do think it's better, some have said that it's only better for Star Wars, and not what they'd want for D&D. I'm one of those who sees Saga as appropriately geared toward Star Wars, but something I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole if it were applied to D&D. :\

I understand. You can touch it only with 2-square pole. :p

Would it be mean-spirited to say that now that DRAGON has been cancelled..that perhaps they don't have a free source of new information to glean new textbooks out of?

Seriously, isn't much of what came out in the class guidebooks rehashes of DRAGON clarified and made palatable?

Mmm....only some of it....unless there are tonnes of articles which are submitted to Dragon, and never see print in the magazine, I doubt it.

I see some, like the Nightsong Enforcer PrC's, for instance, that came from Dragon, but many, such as the Bladesinger, Cavalier, Red Dragon Disciple, Spellsword, etc. that do not.

I think the only thing in D&D that really needs some modification is the skill system and that the Star Wars Saga skill system would be a great replacement.

That + triple hit points at first level.

And ditching iterative attacks in favor of a level-based damage bonus.
And a magic system that doesn't force multiclass casters into patch prestige classes.
And switching saves into attacks vs. defenses.
And a smaller number of more flexible base classes.

I am not sure what to think right now - it just appears to me that there too many changes coming in a row right now:

The cancellation/revocation of the most popular D&D side branches (Dragonlance, Hackmaster), the cancellation of the mags in favor of a yet-to-be-specified digital variant, the narrowing of the FR game line, Gleemax, and so on...

I am not sure what you others think about this, but for me personally, this is way too much in a row to accustom myself quickly. - Not that I'd be a hardcore d20 player, but if all those changes come heralding the famed 4e, that would be way too quick for me to adapt.
If the changes you mentioned took place 18 months ago, I agree. While I disagree with some of the changes (like ceasing the publication of print magazines), it is inevitable in this fast-changing Digital World we live in (damn you, Apple and their iPod). I have to keep reminding myself I am no longer living in the 80's.
