WottC Miniature Handbook Same Mistake as Chainmail?

WotC believed D&D would have been a support for their main product, Chainmail.

That is utterly new to me.

Could you please give me a source for that?

Cheers!

I think one of my biggest counts against the game at the moment is something that others seem to love: the collectible aspect.

If I am fielding an army (or squad) for a game, I want to know in advance what I have. I don't want to play blind-cracker-jack-luck to see if I get the "right" figures. I'd rather pay on a per-figure basis.

I hope everyone else has fun with this game. I won't be dragged to the table, but I see others will have the same fun with this that they do with HeroClix.

IIRC, they'll have some army packs later on, so the non-collectors won't be totally left in the dust. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on an army or two of orcs for cheap.

Don't any of your local game stores sell WizKids figures out of the box? Because mine sells HeroClix figures as low as .25 cents a piece. Which makes it easy to collect whatever figure I want, if they're Commons, at least. You can also order specific minis off of eBay. Bet you'll probably be able to find bucketfulls of Commons and Uncommons for a cheap price once this game gets going.

As for what the previous poster said...

February:

Orc War Party
a non-randomized selection of orcs containing:

4 Kobold Warriors
1 Goblin Sneak
1 Ogre
3 Orc Archers
1 Orc Berserker
6 Orc Warriors.
$19.99

Outlaw War Party
a non-randomized selection of adversaries containing:

1 Cleric of Order
1 Dwarf Axefighter
1 Halfling Veteran
5 Man-at-Arms
3 Elf Archers
1 Wood Elf Skirmisher
2 Wolves
1 Human Wanderer
1 Owlbear
$19.99

So not everything put out will be random. They'll undoubtedly make more non-random packs like the two, above, following different themes.

Maybe I'm missing a piece of the puzzle here but how exactly is that a better deal?

He's not looking for Hasbro or WotC to go out of business. He's pointing out that a 4.0 collectables D&D game is not what he wants and the (possible/plasable) prospect of 4.0 becoming such a game is not something he wants. Personally, I don't want it either.

Now, if they did go that route and the majority of players agree with us and don't like the idea themselves then a huge amount of money would have been invested from WotC's and Hasbro's coffers. The loss of such funds could bankrupt them and that, as you said, is not good for anybody.

Well, since his exact words were "2. I would rather they drop the game, or go out of buisness than see them warp the game to fit whatever the hot trends are."

He'd rather see them go out of business or drop D&D.

I agree that he doesn't want them to change the game to Dungeons & Heroclix but the option of going out of business is a much worse one.

Any company the size of WotC and Hasbro makes contingency plans when it comes to this kind of stuff. Nobody of that size puts all their eggs in one basket. Its called "Risk Assessment."

Starting a new "Collectibles" line is not going to bankrupt WotC and it probably won't even make a scratch on Hasbro's bottom line.

Besides this collectible line will do just fine. WotC produces it, the distributors move it, the retail stores buy it. Even if the consumer doesn't buy the line WotC has already made some money on it. And there are a lot of people that will buy this line whether the naysayers like it or not.

There is a huge secondary market on the Internet for "single" Mage Knight figures. The same thing will happen with these. Why? Because it's profitable for someone.

A retailer might buy these boxes at less than 50% of retail. The box has 8 miniatures. Spread out as 4 Common, 3 Uncommon and 1 rare. If they sell each common for 50 cents and each uncommon for 75 cents they've already recuperated they're initial investment. Selling the rare for even $5 gives them a larger margin of profit than selling the box at retail cost.

Is there going to be a secondary market? You bet!

I want everything even remotely associated with D&D to make money. For example, I want the new D&D movie to make money, even if it sucks. More money is good for everybody, of course, but also that improves the chances of a sequel, and who knows, maybe the fifth movie will finally not suck.

Terrible movies like the D&D movie deserved to be total failures. IF that had been a hit I would have lost faith in humanity. :D

Actually, no, my local store does not sell individual WizKids figures (the FLGS is only partially a game store -- the rest is puzzles, boardgames, etc.). I could probably find a place that does, but then again I am not really a fan of WizKids figures. If I did want them, eBay would be my way to go.

But so far, as I said, no one has really sold me on either the figures or the rules. As I also said, I hope the rest of you who ARE sold on the rules have a great time.
