Would There Be Any Interest In This?

Ok. I haven't finished the Sil yet, and my Tolkien bestiary refers to Ancalagon as the greatest. That'll teach me to trust a third party references, then.

Ok here are the ones I think would serve best as Iconic Dragons and were they originate:

Leviathan (Biblical)

Tiamat (Ancient Mesopotamia) yes i know she's been made

Apep (Ancient Egypt) also already made

Nidhoggr (Norse Myth)

Quetzacoatl (Mexican or more accuratle Aztec)

Lung (Chinese)

Dragon of Colchis (Ancient Greek)

Beowulf's Dragon (Old English)

Fafnir (Norse Myth)

Smaug (Tolkein: Middle earth

Some of these may need to be researched abit but they are all "true" or at least some of the most iconic in our world.

<Nitpicking>

Apep was called Apopsis.

Lung is more than one single dragon, check OA for the list. (there are 8 or so different lung dragons in OA, each one from asian myth).

Sorry about that, but I can't help it.

I think in all fairness that Apep can be called either Apep or Apophis/Apopsis, you don't have to choose a certain one (especially as Apep is the proper egyptian name and Apopsis is the Greek). Also whilst i think that it can be correct to use 'lung dragons' to describe a range of various dragons Slickblade was indeed referring to one particular dragon. In this case Celestial Lung who was lord of all dragons and lives in the sky during spring and summer and the sea during autumn and winter. He (this individual) had a snakes tale a horses head and five claws on each foot setting him apart from the other oriental dragons who had four, unlike the other oriental dragons he was also said to have large wings I think.
He is a benign being that supervises the fertility of all plants and animals.

He is indeed iconic, iI would have included him myself but felt I had already talked too much at length, I instead chose Fei Lin as my oriental iconic dragon as he seemed more fun and unique to me than Lung. :D

Myself I would say taht Ladon has more flavour than the dragon of colchis but it's all a metter of personal taste :D

As I said, I can't help it :D I agree with you on Ladon and Fei Lin.

I think the best way to do this is to take on mythological dragon from each continent (Europe: Either Ladon, or Nidhog for example), and five or so dragons from litterature.

For the Australian/Oceanian dragon, my vote goes to the Rainbow/Dream Serpent from aborigini myth.

You could, however, infer that Ancalagon is the most powerful from the FOTR, though. Gandalf mentions that not even the fires of Ancalagon the Black could destroy the One Ring.

Also, Ancalagon, even if he wasn't the strongest, I believe must have been the biggest dragon, as he destroyed so much when he fell.

I took a poll at another board, and most people said Ancalagon was stronger due to these points.

Boz: ROTFLMAO!

Snarfoogle: Ancalagon was bigger and stronger physically, but Glaurung was still the more powerful of the two, mostly due to his magical abilities, his vile stench, and his incredible evil. Heck, his evil was so great that not even the dark god could control him. ;)
