Would this be considered cheating?

Clearly, with this glaring lack of definition in a basic game concept, the d20 system is not nearly thorough enough for your use. Might I suggest something like Advanced Squad Leader from Avalon Hill? I'm sure you could find a copy on Ebay.

Last time I looked, ther number 20 is in the range of 1-20. So technically it does generate one of the numbers in range, so I don't see what the problem is.
The problem is that your a using a definition for what constitutes a d20 other than the normal generally accepted definition. In a similar vein if I say that the word detect means to obliterate I could argue that the Spot skill allows me kill anything I am able to see. Nothing in the rules that states that detect does not mean to obliterate so this would be a legal take on the rules, right?

Why do people bother answering questions like this? If you read the question, and then think, "Idiot.", just move along. I am not saying that KenM is an idiot, it is just the word that popped into my head when I read the question.

And yet, even you could not move along without some comment ... :D

Cheating is only cheating if you get caught. Or if you have morals. But, if you're a slimy SOB with no morals and you manage to get away with it, nobody will be able to call you a cheater. :)

Your die is generating a number from 20 to 20, not 1 to 20. I'm posative that I read a Sage ruling on this a little while ago, but I can't seem to recall which issue it was in. Skim through the last couple of years though and I'm sure you'll find it.

Then again, I think he may have reversed his position on the matter when someone else asked him the same question a week later...

Cheating is cheating and has not about getting caught or having morals.

Feeling guilty about cheating has to do with morals.
Getting caught is all about rubbing the welts you get from the real d20s the DM and the players throw at you. ;)
