Would you be satisifed with d20 as your only RPG? [Ties into RyanD's blog entry.]

Like Gamecat, I'm in the same boat. In the past six years, the only games I've played that haven't been D20 are Paranoia and Dying Earth. Both of those I only played for a couple of sessions (despite really, really liking Dying Earth). If somehow there were no other games on the market and I had to play D20, I'd be pretty content.

I have only played d&d 3.5, but i would like to play vampire or something (cue the hot goth girls).
Try as I might, they don't turn me on. :\

As for Vampire, I've had a bad experience that ruined any chance of ever playing that game again. Loved the [WoD] setting though.

I used to have quite a few systems on my shelf. But we always ended up playing D&D in the long run. Thus, as a game designer I loved to read certain rulebooks because they inspired me. But as a player, I'm perfectly happy with D&D.

Nobody ever wanted to play Amber in our group. :(

Das Schwarze Auge, Rolemaster, Middle Earth, Paranoia, Mutant Chronicles, Shadowrun, GURPS... Like tears in rain...

I have played L5R, Vampire, ADnD, 3.5, Mutants and Masterminds, and a few others. Not a big list but there are few games out there with the genre type that I like.

So its DnD for me Please.

For the past several years, the only games I've played in have been d20. Furthermore, I now don't really have the time to be bothered learning new systems, and especially new systems that don't serve any good purpose. So, unless the designers of a new game have a good reason for not using d20, I feel they should do so.

So, my answer would be 'Yes', I could be satisfied if d20 was all there was. However, that would not be my preference... since there are some cases where a non-d20 system is preferable. Additionally, I have found that there is a 'D&D mindset' that seems to creep in whenever players are doing anything d20, which makes certain genres (notably horror) extremely difficult to run effectively. So, although d20 can do horror (IMO), I don't think I would ever try using it for that purpose.

For one thing, there is many different d20 games, so the question isn't entirely relevant to me. That is, I could be satisfied with only d20, but in the end that would be one of its many versions that I would have houseruled to death. In any case, I am bored with D&D per se, but if there only was this game, I would probably stick with it... but as above, eventually totally houseruled.

I prefer playing other systems too. Ideally I wouldn't be playing D&D as often as I do, but it's the only game that provides enough material for people short on time.

I have to agree with the sentiment that a majority of players do not care about the system or game mechanics. They just want to sit down and play.

For me 3.5 D&D is probably my last stop in the D&D world. I have so much stuff and ideas for it now that I don't want any other games. And my groups seem to agree.
